The dimly lit room was ablaze with fervor and passion.
"Who are you?"
In her hazy, inebriated state, Jane Rivers couldn't discern the true visage of the man before her. Yet, his eyes, deeper than the starry sky, left an indelible impression upon her.
"Ah!"
Startled, Jane jolted upright from the bed, perspiration glistening on her brow.
She hadn't experienced this vivid recollection of a passionate night with a stranger four years past for quite some time.
Once again, she had dreamt of that reckless night four years ago, when she mistakenly slept with a stranger. The morning after, the man had vanished without a trace.
Allowing her gaze to wander for a moment, Jane sighed wistfully before lifting the covers and preparing to rouse her son, Jason Rivers, for school.
Four years ago, following that reckless night, Jane had fallen pregnant and given birth to a healthy baby.
Emerging from the bathing chamber, Jane's door was abruptly thrust open by Amelia Emerson, the Mrs. Rivers of the family.
"Jane, your father requires your presence in the study!" Amelia declared, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Why have you called me so early in the morning?"
Jane's delicate features hardened, believing there could be nothing good.
"We need to discuss your marriage!"
Amelia sneered, her tone sharp and mocking as she glanced at Jane.
"You've been idling at home with your son, living off us. The Rivers family can't afford to support both of you forever!"
"So, you intend to marry me off for money, once again?"
Clutching her hands tightly at her sides, Jane's anger was evident in her voice as she retorted.
As the illegitimate daughter of the Rivers family, Amelia had never treated her well. Four years ago, they had intended to marry her off to a playboy for their own benefit. However, when she became pregnant, they called off the marriage.
"Enough! Come to the study right now, or you can never see your disgraceful mother again!" Amelia threatened.
Jane's teeth ground together, her eyes glaring fiercely at Amelia, who walked ahead with an air of arrogance. Reluctantly, she followed into the study.
In the study, Lawrence Rivers, a man of scholarly and refined demeanor, sat behind his desk, waiting for Jane.
"Who do you plan to marry me off to this time, in exchange for your own benefits?"
Standing upright before the desk, Jane gazed at Lawrence, derision evident in her voice.
Lawrence was renowned in Elderbrook as a successful business man, renowned for his good character. Only she, his daughter, knew him to be a complete hypocrite!
Had he not concealed his marriage to deceive her mother, she would not have become an illegitimate daughter!
"Jane, you must mend your stubborn ways, or you will suffer in the Beaumont Family."
Facing Jane's hateful sneer, Lawrence smiled affectionately, appearing like a doting father who indulged his daughter's bad temper.
"The Beaumont family? How could such good fortune fall to me from the heavens?"
Jane couldn't believe that Lawrence and Amelia intended to marry her into the prestigious Beaumont family of Elderbrook, a household of longstanding prosperity. Her eyes were filled with mockery.
Compared to the flourishing Beaumont family, the Rivers family paled in comparison, like a blade of grass beneath a towering tree.
"Jane, you must have heard of Frederick Beaumont from the Beaumont family, right? Although he is disabled, marrying you and Jason off to him will ensure your comfort. You may consider it a stroke of luck, my dear."
It appeared that Lawrence was not amused by Jane's sarcasm, as a slight furrow appeared on his face, diminishing the affectionate smile.
"So, it is Elizabeth's refusal that has brought me to this point!"
A cold, mirthless smile touched her lips, knowing her family's true intentions.
Although Frederick, a member of the Beaumont Family, was disabled, she was familiar with him. As the eldest grandson of the Beaumont Family, he had been involved in a car accident with his parents when he was just a teenager. While his parents died, he miraculously survived, confined to a wheelchair. In his thirties, he remained unmarried.
"How could our exceptional Elizabeth be married to a cripple!"
"Jane, for you to take Elizabeth's place and marry Frederick is a stroke of luck, a privilege that most would envy! The Beaumont Family does not even mind accepting you and your child, and if it were me, I would gladly marry into such a prestigious family and enjoy the blessings it brings!"
"Why don't you marry him, then?"
Jane's eyes narrowed coldly and mockingly as she looked down.
As the illegitimate daughter of the Rivers family, she had never been the recipient of any favorable opportunities, while misfortune always seemed to find her.
"You!"
Amelia was so furious she can barely speak, her finger trembling as she pointed at Jane's nose.
"Jane, how can you speak to your mother like that?"
Lawrence's expression turned stern, assuming the role of a strict father.
"My mother is Rose Bennet, not Amelia Emerson!" Jane's fingers tightened around themselves, the sound of her knuckles cracking echoing like the toll of a funeral bell.
Her mother, a pitiable woman, grew weaker and weaker after giving birth to her. She frequently fell ill, requiring medication. Being too young at the time, she lacked the means to earn money for her mother's treatment, so she could only turn to Lawrence for help.
Of course, Lawrence was not so kind as to help treat her mother's illness. The Rivers family owned a jewelry company, and he noticed Jane's exceptional talent in jewelry design. He struck a deal, offering to send her abroad to study jewelry design in exchange for becoming a stepping stone for Elizabeth upon her return.
Who would have imagined that all the best-selling jewelry designed by the renowned jewelry designer Elizabeth Rivers actually came from the hands of Jane!
To secure Jane's continued output for Elizabeth, Lawrence had "kidnapped" her mother, Rose Bennet, permitting Jane a single visit each month.
"Jane, how dare you?!"
Amelia glared at Jane with anger, unleashing a torrent of curse.
"A wretched creature, burdened with a child, who would want to marry you? To marry Frederick would be your luck!. Mark my words: you have to agree to the arrangement; otherwise, you will never again see your wretched mother, Rose Bennet!"
"Amelia, you may curse at me, but you cannot curse at my mother!"
Jane's eyes burned with a fiery intensity as she fought the urge to lunge at Amelia and rip her mouth apart. But she knew better than to act on that impulse. If she did, it would only bring more suffering upon her mother, who was tightly held in their grasp.
"Jane, cast aside your childish temper. Your mother asked to see you a few days ago,"
Lawrence's brow furrowed, his displeasure with Jane as clear as day. The unspoken message in his words hung heavy in the air.
"Very well. I will do it."
Jane's nails dug painfully into the palms of her hands, drawing blood, as she struggled to suppress the intense urge to kill that welled up within her. She gritted her teeth and agreed.
"You just wait and see!" she vowed inside.
Upon her consent, Lawrence and Amelia exchanged a glance and smiled triumphantly.
Amelia's satisfaction was written plainly on her face, while Lawrence's smugness lurked in the depths of his eyes.
On March 15th, without Frederick's appearance, Jane simply went to the County Clerk's Office and got their marriage certificate. Here she was - a married woman.
Afterwards, Jane moved into the Beaumont Family residence with her son, Jason Rivers.
On their wedding night, Jane held Jason as they sat on the red bridal bed, awaiting Frederick's arrival.
"Mom, don't be afraid! I will protect you!" Jason declared, his young face set with a determination that belied his years.
If his new father dared to mistreat Jane, he would fight him.
"I am not afraid..."
Jane gently stroked her son's cheek, her voice soft.
As she was about to speak, the door to their new room opened, and a slender man entered, bound to a wheelchair.
The man had a pair of eyes deeper than the night sky, and she noticed it at first glance.

The gentleman's eyes bore a striking resemblance to those of the man with whom she had shared an unforgettable night four years prior!
Jane found herself quite astonished, but as her attention was drawn to the thin blanket that concealed his legs, she quickly banished the preposterous notion from her thoughts.
Frederick, being perpetually confined to a wheelchair, could not possibly be the man from her past. Their eyes, it seemed, were merely a striking coincidence.
As the wheelchair halted a few steps from the crimson wedding bed, Frederick gently released his grip on the armrests and placed his hands upon his covered legs. His countenance, though pale, was adorned with a tender smile that evoked a sense of warmth and ease.
"Miss Jane, you and Jason may rest here this evening, while I shall take my leave to the adjacent guest room," he spoke softly.
"Goodness,"
she thought.
Frederick appeared to be a man of great kindness and understanding.
"Knowing that our union was not of your own desire, I shall not presume to impose my presence upon you,"
he continued, his brows lifting in a gentle expression that conveyed both warmth and solace.
"Thank you!"
Jane exchanged a glance with her son, Jason, and sincerely appreciated Frederick's understanding nature.
Marriage to Frederick had been an unwelcome circumstance, and she had envisioned him as a man of ill temper, somber disposition, or even twisted mind. Yet, to her astonishment, he revealed himself to be a man of great affability and kindness.
"Evan, join us!"
Frederick called his loyal servant into the room.
"Sir!"
Evan Lee entered, holding a beautifully wrapped box, which he handed to Frederick upon his master's signal.
"Jason, come closer,"
Frederick smiled and gestured for the boy to approach.
"Mom?"
Jason looked at Jason, his eyes seeking her consent.
"Go ahead."
Jason encouraged with a tender smile, patting her son's head.
To their amazement, Frederick had prepared a thoughtful gift for Jason!
"Father..."
Jason tentatively addressed him, his countenance a blend of awkwardness and curiosity.
Undeterred, Frederick handed the box to the boy, his countenance warm and inviting.
"Open it and see if it pleases you."
Cradling the box in his arms, Jason glanced back at Jason for permission to unwrap it with his eyes.
Jason nodded, her smile affectionate.
"Ultraman Tiga! Thank you, Father!"
Jason exclaimed with unbridled joy as he uncovered the gift.
"As you desire, my dear!"
Frederick tenderly caressed the elated visage of young Jason, his countenance radiating warmth, while his profound black eyes, more mysterious than the cosmos, seemed to harbor an enigmatic depth.
Jason, momentarily taken aback by the cool sensation of Frederick's touch, furrowed his delicate brows in contemplation.
Though the new father's hand was chilled, Jason found himself not repelled by it, but rather, inexplicably drawn to the sensation, yearning for more of such contact.
The boy's furrowed brows reflected his perplexity at the absurdity of his own thoughts.
"Off to bed, now,"
Frederick whispered, his voice as gentle as a summer breeze, and with Evan's assistance, he took his leave of the chamber.
"Mother, our new father is truly kind! Perhaps fortune shall smile upon us from this day forth!"
No sooner had Frederick departed than Jason eagerly clambered onto the bed, clasping Jason' arm with anticipation.
He and his mother were subjected to the unrelenting cruelty of the Rivers family within their own abode, day upon day. Regrettably, the young lad's youth rendered him powerless to shield his mother from such maltreatment!
"Does a single gift of an Ultraman Tiga suffice to convince you of his goodness?"
Jason, with a playful pinch to her son's charming, youthful face, chuckled softly.
The sincerity of Frederick's affable demeanor remained uncertain, as first impressions were not always a reliable gauge of one's true nature.
"At the very least, my new father does not harbor the same disdain for me as the Rivers family does!"
Jason, in a display of defiance, offered a rebuttal, his gaze bearing the visage of a fox, inherited from his mother, Jason, and conveying the depths of his humiliation, resentment, and melancholy.
In the Rivers household, he was branded a "bastard" or a "burden," with no one to speak of him in favorable terms!
"Jason ..."
Observing her son's distress, Jason tenderly enfolded him in her embrace, her fox-like eyes reflecting the same anguish that filled his heart.
It pained her to know that she had subjected Jason to such trials at such a tender age!
Upon first learning of her pregnancy, she had not planned to bring Jason into the world. Her circumstances within the Rivers family were far from favorable, and to bring a child into such an environment would only ensure their shared suffering.
When Jason beheld the baby's heartbeat during the pregnancy examination, her heart softened, and she could not bring herself to extinguish the life of a child yearning to explore the world's beauty.
Now, if asked whether she harbored any regrets about giving birth to Jason, she would not. Her only sorrow stemmed from her son's need to endure hardships alongside her.
Leaving the Rivers family and marrying into the Beaumont family, who could predict whether this was a leap from one fiery pit to another?
Jason, her thoughts in disarray, reached out to caress her son's head, her fox-like eyes betraying an undeniable sense of trepidation and unease.
"Fear not, Mother. I shall shield you!"
Perceiving the fear in Jason, Jason raised his innocent and handsome visage, bravely thumping his chest in assurance.
"Very well!"
Touched, Jason smiled and playfully tousled his hair.
"Go, wash up and slumber. You must rest to grow tall and strong, so you can protect your mother, my little Jason!"
"Mother, I've already grown up. Can you please refrain from calling me by my nickname!"
The moment Jason called him by his nickname, Jason, who had just been a valiant young warrior, became flustered and pouted, clambering off the bed to wash up by himself in the bathroom.
Witnessing this, Jason chuckled again and began to tidy the bed, removing the red dates, peanuts, and red jujubes strewn across the crimson wedding bed.
Since they were here, they would make the best of their situation. With Jason by her side, she was not afraid, even if the Beaumont family turned out to be another fiery pit.
In the guest room, Evan attended to Frederick as he prepared for slumber.
"Master, are you truly going to keep them here?"
Evan's cold, half-lit countenance was concealed in the shadows, his expression inscrutable.
"For the present, I shall heed Grandfather's wishes and assign someone to protect them in secret. Should anyone attempt to harm them, I shall ensure their departure!"
Frederick flipped a page in his book, his formerly gentle demeanor supplanted by an icy, unwelcoming mien. His lengthy eyelashes cast a profound shadow over his eyes, which were even more enigmatic than the night sky.
He had never desired marriage, and he had never envisioned his bride to be her.
Perhaps this was fate, but the enigmatic Beaumont family was not a fitting sanctuary for them.
"Jason, rise and shine! We shall be late for school!"
The next day, at a quarter past six, Jason roused her son from his slumber, urging him to wash and dress as the alarm clock rang.
Escorted by a servant, they made their way to the dining hall.
At the head of the table sat a very benevolent elderly man, Benjamin, the patriarch of the Beaumont family and grandfather of Frederick.
"Jane and Jason, come and sit!"
Benjamin beckoned to the pair with a warm smile.
"Jason, remember to greet your great-grandfather!"
Jason clutched her son's small hand tightly and whispered before leading him towards the table.
"Father, how can a child from an unscrupulous woman be deemed worthy of being your great-grandson? Stanley, is the true gem of our family!"
Before Jason and Jason could approach the table, a cold sneer escaped the lips of a haughty woman with upturned eyebrows, seated below Benjamin. Her voice carried loudly, reaching even the ears of the servants attending to their duties in the parlor.
