Chapter 1 | I Can't Be Your Luna, I'm a Warrior

Alexandra:

"Hello? Are you even listening to me?"

I shook my head, trying to come out of my own thoughts. Cassie was looking at me, annoyed, as she waited for me to answer.

"Sorry. I just have a lot on my mind right now."

She sighed as she focused back on the group and began speaking again. This allowed me to escape back into my thoughts. I knew I really should be paying attention. We were at war right now.

Ever since Cassie's 16th birthday, things had only gotten worse. My mind couldn't focus on that though. I was worried about Mason. He had been challenged as Alpha, and I was worried about the upcoming battle.

Cassie understood, but she had to worry about her own pack and problems. Ever since her party, she'd been more aggressive, almost matching even V's temper.

"You may go," she announced to the room, and we all got up. "Except for you."

I groaned as I plopped back down into my seat. "Talk."

I stayed silent for a while, and she got up. I knew she was going to get my thoughts out of me, whether it was willingly or by force.

"I'm worried about Mason." I crossed my arms and tried to look anywhere but her.

"Then go see him."

My jaw dropped at what she said. I couldn't just up and leave. I had responsibilities here.

Cassie began to tap her fingers impatiently. "I need to know if you're going to go so I can tell Nick that we need him for a week."

She was serious. I couldn't believe she was going to let me leave like this. The only question left was whether Mason would let me.

"I would, but—" Cassie threw a pen at me. A damn pen. Was she out of her mind?

"Just go. He isn't going to kick you out." I hated her for throwing a pen at me, but I was thankful that she had said that.

No one knew Mason as well as she did, so I accepted what she told me about him. With a nod of my head, I stood to my feet. "Okay. I'll go."

"Great. Now go away. I have work to do."

Chapter 2 | I Can't Be Your Luna, I'm a Warrior

Mason:

Today had to be the most nerve-wracking day of my life. It was the day that I would see my daughter for the first time.

With everything that'd been going on, I couldn't go out to Denver to be there for the birth, but I sent for them as soon as the doctor said she could fly.

I had many regrets about hooking up with that human girl. Finding my mate made me ashamed of the choices that I had made. I was bringing in a child that wasn't hers.

She seemed to be okay with it, but I wasn't okay with the burden I had placed on her already.

"Alpha, Alexandra from the Night Stalker pack is here."

This couldn't be happening. What was she doing here? Cassie didn't say anything about a visit when we talked yesterday.

"Bring her here." Whatever it was I just needed to get her out of here soon. I didn't want her to be here when Michelle came.

I paced back and forth, waiting for them to hurry and bring Alexandra in. Michelle and the baby would be here any moment.

"Alpha," My beta broke me out of my thoughts.

Without saying anything, he looked to Alexandra and she came in.

She looked beautiful, like always, but a lot was also different about her. The dark circles under her eyes. Her hollow cheeks. Even her muscle definition seemed to be fading.

"What's wrong?" I asked, looking her over to see all the changes.

She didn't answer, so I looked back at her face to see it turn a faint pink color as she looked anywhere but at me. "Alexandra?"

She slowly turned her gaze to me, and I waited to see if I would get an answer to my question.

"Nothing's wrong."

I didn't believe her for a second. "Then why have you lost weight? It also looks like you haven't been sleeping, which explains why your training has been suffering."

She looked at me completely dumbfounded, and I remembered I was short on time. "Look, I'm kind of short on time, so if you could tell me what's going on, it would really help."

Alexandra had opened her mouth to say something when my beta came back into the room.

"Alpha."

"What now?!" I yelled, annoyed that I had almost gotten her to talk. "Michelle is here."

Just great. I ran my hand over my face in annoyance. "Well, bring them in."

I started pacing again. The worry about seeing my daughter for the first time gaining momentum in my mind.

"Who's Michelle?" Now I was worried for a whole different reason. I hadn't told Alexandra yet, and now didn't seem like the best time.

Not really having a solution, I mindlinked my beta. "Blaine."

"Yes, Alpha."

"Can you get a room ready for Alexandra?"

"Yes, Alpha."

"Take her to her room as soon as you get back here."

There was silence, but I was sure he was going to do it even without saying yes.

"Why aren't you answering me?" I could tell she was annoyed. "Am I interrupting something?"

I turned towards Michelle and give Blaine a look.

He quickly walked over to Alexandra. She looked like she was going to flip a gasket. It was going to be fun trying to explain this later.

Alexandra:

Who the hell was that chick and why did he make me leave? I was lying on the bed looking at my phone.

I wanted to call Cassie. I didn't want to annoy her, but I was also feeling very lonely at the moment. Caving, I dialed Cassie and waited for her to pick up.

"You literally just left. Why are you calling me already?"

I opened my mouth to say something, anything, but nothing came. I literally choked up and started to cry.

"Oh my God, Alexandra, what's wrong? Do I have to come over there?!" Cassie asked partially panicked.

I tried to regain my composure to tell her that I was fine, but I just couldn't.

There was a commotion on her end before I heard a very low and disgruntled voice, "Tell Mason I'm coming to see him." V hung up, and I was even more afraid.

Without a thought, I jumped up and ran out of the room, right into one of his pack members.

"Sorry," I quickly yelled over my shoulder as I continued to run down the hallway. I stopped when I came to a fork. I had no idea which way to go, and I didn't have enough time to make mistakes.

Realizing that I was wasting time by contemplating my choices, I just ran down the right hallway. When in doubt, go to the right—or I think that's what they say.

While I was running, I tried to catch Mason's scent, but I couldn't. I totally went the wrong way.

Frustrated, I turned around and headed back down the way I had just come.

I was stopped by the wolf who had taken me to the room in the first place.

"Where are you going?" he questioned me as he blocked off my path to the other hallway.

I heard a bang before the wolf took off down the hallway I had just been trying to enter. There was no way V was here already. He was fast, but it was physically impossible for even Cassie to make the trip that fast.

Quickly I followed after the wolf and stopped when I saw Mason and Michelle standing face to face.

"What are you doing here?"

"Trying to warn you," I interjected, causing Mason to face me.

He didn't get a chance to say anything because Michelle spoke. "We need to talk," she stated flatly before turning her gaze to me, "Alone."

I was confused as to whether or not I should leave. When Mason's gaze didn't shift in my direction, I panicked more about being in this situation. "I'm busy right now," Mason stated, and I didn't know if he was saying that to me or her.

Michelle seemed to think he was talking to her because she got really red in the face. "So she's the reason you haven't called!"

"No. I didn't call because I didn't want to."

Oh crap. What did I walk in on? I just wanted to tell him that V was coming to make an unannounced visit for an undisclosed reason, and now I was caught in the middle of whatever this was.

The baby in Michelle's arms began to cry, and it instantly eased the tension in the room.

"Take them to a room," Mason told the wolf who had tried to stop me. Then he walked to his desk to sit down.

I slowly followed and decided to stand next to the chair on the other side instead of sitting. I wrapped my arms around the top of the wooden chair and leaned into it, looking towards Mason.

"What do I need a warning about?" he asked with a huff.

I could tell he was stressed about everything that was happening with that girl, and I had nothing but more stress to give to him. "V is on his way here."

Mason's eyes quickly snapped up to look at me. No one liked V coming to visit them, especially unannounced.

"Who was that girl?" I found myself asking involuntarily.

Mason froze, and I started to worry that I had hit a nerve with my question. Was he even going to answer me?

"It's a very long story that I don't want to get into right now, but I will tell you in time."

I felt a little better because he said he would tell me.

"Why is V coming? Why are you here? Cassie didn't say anything about you coming yesterday."

I should have known that this would happen. How could I tell him that I had come just to be around him, to be with him, without really saying that?

Not to mention I really didn't know why V was coming. I doubted it was because I had called Cassie.

"I don't know why he's coming. I called Cassie, and he took the phone and told me to tell you that he was coming."

Mason went deep into thought as he furrowed his brow. "So you came just to tell me that?"

No. That wasn't why I came. "No, he told me this when your beta put me in a room."

"Blaine." I looked to Mason, confused. "His name is Blaine."

I nodded, realizing that he was telling me his beta's name.

"Then why did you come?" He really wasn't going to let this go.

*****

Mason:

She was avoiding telling me what she was doing here. I knew she didn't want to tell me, but it was eating at me.

She kept huffing and playing with her hands, so I knew she was nervous. I didn't understand. What was there to be nervous about?

"Cassie said I could come. She's going to get Nick to cover my duties for a couple of weeks."

I was going to ask her again why she came, but I got stuck on her last sentence. She was going to stay with me for a couple of weeks.

I will admit that I was a little excited about the idea because I liked having Alexandra around. I did feel something for her; I was just not convinced that it was love. I also didn't need her here with me for weeks while Michelle was here too.

I mulled over what to say, or even do, now, and I came up with nothing, absolutely nothing.

"Alpha," Blaine's voice rang through the deadly silent room.

I nodded, still trying to think of what I was going to do.

"Michelle insists that she see you now." Michelle had to be my worst mistake. What I saw in that girl, I would never know.

Turning to Blaine, a thought crossed my mind. Maybe I should let her come here and tell Alexandra what was going on.

It might scare her away to learn of my extra baggage.

"Bring her here." Blaine nodded and left the room.

"Do you want me to leave?" Alexandra stood further away than she had been a few moments ago, like she had been inching for the door.

"No. It's time to tell you who Michelle is. When do you think V will get here?"

"Probably in three or four hours if he's driving."

I nodded, thinking about how I was going to handle that situation. It would have to wait. One thing at a time.

There was a knock before Michelle came in, the baby still in her arms.

"This wasn't part of the deal. You said you wanted to meet her, not lock us up in a room while your girlfriend is here." Alexandra blushed as she looked at her feet.

I knew she was uncomfortable, and Michelle calling her my girlfriend probably made it worse.

I stood to my feet, crossing my arms as I walked around my desk to stand on the same side as them.

"Alexandra, this is Michelle, and she's holding my daughter."
