“Omg, is he for real? He’s so handsome!"
“He’s like the male lead in the books I’m reading!”
Fixing the eyeglasses I was wearing, I slowly tilted my head up, my eyes were still weary as I forced them open to see what was going on with the sudden chaos.
“Where did he come from? England?”
“He’s probably a prince.”
“I am certain!”
Drawing my eyes on the man who just entered, the white uniform fits him impeccably like it was molded onto him. And as my eyes landed on his face, one word to describe it…
Perfection.
“Please introduce yourself in front of your classmate who will be with you until the end of the semester Mr. Toussaint.”
“Bonjour! Blaise Toussaint, 20 years old and hot.” He winked at everyone which made them scream to the core, except me of course. “Aaaaaaaaaaaaa!”
The audacity. I went back on my desk, and was about to close my eyes when…
“Miss Laurent! Are you sleeping in my class?!” I could feel the controlled rage in my teacher’s voice. Everyone was silenced including the new transfer student in front, what was his name again? Blake? Blaire? Whatever. As usual, I fix my thick glasses and look at Miss Boucher, her forehead was creasing frustratedly.
“No Miss, I’m just not…” I shortly glanced at the man and met his eyes. Why do I feel weird with his stares or was it just my imagination?
“Interested.” I continued.
Her eyes widened, more furiously this time. “What did you just say, Miss Laurent? Give some respect to the new student at least!”
“What’s disrespectful about that Miss Boucher? I am just being honest, we’ve wasted more than 15 minutes just by having him meet us, when you were supposed to be teaching now.” I calmly replied and never blinked as I met her mad gaze.
“I don’t give a damn whoever he is, what country he came from…if he’s a prince or what, but I went here so I could study medicine and not to waste my time like this,” I added before I seated, ignoring everyone.
“What’s wrong with her?”
“Isn’t she overreacting?”
I didn’t even shrug at the sudden turn of gossip on me. I’m used to it anyway, what’s the difference?
“Why is she speaking now? I thought she was mute.”
“Silence! Enough of this Miss Laurent, see me in my office now.” Miss Boucher tried to compose her words before leaving the room. I sighed and followed her, but before I left, I met his gaze again. I saw how a wide grin formed on his face, I just ignored him and left.
“Just apologize to Mr. Toussaint.” Those five words echoed in the four corners of the room.
“I didn’t do anything wrong, Miss Boucher.” I had to stand my ground. I would never apologize to him.
“Then you’ll be partnering with him with the medical laboratory assessment for the rest of the semester, Miss Laurent.”
“W-what? No, Miss Boucher…”
“I’m not asking permission from you, Miss Laurent. This is an order, not a request or I’ll give a failing mark on that task.”
“You can’t do that to me, Miss Boucher, that’s completely against the ethical guidelines of this university…”
“My husband owns this university, Miss Laurent let me remind you that.”
It’s not a threat but a sign that this conversation is over. I leave her office without saying a word.
“What happened Sol!?” Elodie’s eyes were full of curiosity as she walked fast towards me.
“Nothing much Elodie, let’s go home.”
“Oh c’mon, Soleil Laurent! I know it’s not nothing! You made a scene earlier, and that was amazing!”
I just shook my head.
“Yeah, it was amazing that I ended up working with that transfer for the end of the semester.”
“What!? No way!”
“Yeah right? That’s so absurd.”
“It was supposed to be me urgh! I was about to request to Miss Boucher about that! I envy you, Sol!”
“Huh? Envy for what?” I threw her a disgusted look and shook my head in dismay. She looks imagining things beyond reality with how her eyes start to tantalize before they close.
“Weirdo!” I snorted before leaving her there and started walking my way out of the university. She’s getting out of control indeed over that transfer guy.
As I waited for the bus my eyes landed on the 6-foot-tall guy in the opposite direction, my blood boils thinking that this man would be my partner for a very important task until the end of the semester.
‘Should I talk to him about it then?’
Right, I think there’s no other time. I hope he doesn’t like the idea so he can talk to Miss Boucher. Stepping my feet out of the passenger’s waiting area, I was about to cross the road when…
“Miss look out!”
As the motorcycle sped toward me, time seemed to crawl, yet I was paralyzed. My legs felt like they were encased in cement, each attempt to move them a vain effort against the fear gripping my body. The distant noise of the city faded into a muffled hum, and I knew it was too late to escape the looming impact.
In a split second, a strong force collided with me—but not in the way I expected. Instead of pain, I felt warmth and firmness around my waist as I was yanked backward with such power that the world spun around me. The jarring sensation of being pulled from the street was the last thing I remembered before my vision blurred.
I gasped, heart pounding against my chest, and instinctively grabbed onto whatever—or whoever—had caught me. My knees buckled, but instead of falling, I was held upright by a steady arm. When I opened my eyes, he was there.
Blaise Toussaint.
His face hovered just inches from mine, close enough that I could see the intensity behind his eyes, the same ones I’d dismissed earlier in class. His arm still wrapped firmly around my waist, steadying me, his chest rising and falling heavily as if he’d just sprinted a marathon. His eyes—now dark, fierce, and entirely focused on me—bore into mine with a peculiar mix of frustration and concern.
For a moment, neither of us moved. His grip on me tightened, and my breath hitched. My heart, still racing from the near-miss, pulsed harder under his intense stare. He was silent, but the weight of his gaze said more than words ever could.
“Oh my God, Soleil! Are you alright?!” Elodie asked, snapping me back to reality. The spell broke, and I blinked, trying to tear my focus away from Blaise.
But I couldn’t. Not entirely.
He hadn’t let go of me yet, and somehow, I didn’t pull away either. The world around us was a blur of noises, the screeching bike now distant, Elodie’s frantic footsteps growing louder as she rushed over, but all I could focus on was the way his hand lingered at my side, the way his eyes seemed to study me.
“You should be more careful,” he finally said, his voice low but tinged with something almost unrecognizable—anger? Relief? Amusement? I wasn’t sure.
I swallowed hard. “I… I didn’t see it coming,” I whispered.
Blaise tilted his head, a smirk ghosting his lips. “Clearly.”
He released me then, stepping back as if the moment we shared was nothing more than a passing breeze. But I could still feel the imprint of his hand on my waist, the intensity of his presence lingering like an unshakable shadow.
Elodie reached us, her eyes wide with panic. “Sol! You almost died! I saw the whole thing—if it wasn’t for Blaise, you—” she stopped herself, taking a deep breath as if to calm her nerves.
I forced a weak smile. “I’m fine, really.”
But I wasn’t sure I believed it myself. As I glanced back at Blaise, his expression had shifted once again—this time, his playful grin was back, the casual wink from class reappearing as if nothing had happened.
“We’ll have plenty of time to work on our project,” he said. “See you around, Soleil.”
And just like that, he walked away, leaving me standing there, still reeling from the shock of both the near accident and the unexpected savior who had just saved me from it. The pounding in my chest had less to do with the bike, and more to do with Blaise Toussaint.
“Sol! Are you alright!? Do you want me to bring you to the hospital!?” It was the anxious voice of my best friend getting louder and louder. But I could not move, my eyes were still fixed on him until he disappeared, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. However, everything started to get blurry and went black as my chest tightened and I ran out of breath.

“Aaaaaaaaaaaaah!”
‘Was it a nightmare?’
Sweat started forming on my forehead, dripping down to my cheeks. I could feel some on my neck and my chest. My heart was beating so fast, and I could hardly hear it due to its fast pace. I felt like my soul went out of my body, and thinking that Blaise Toussaint saved me makes me want to puke. What a terrible nightmare. I extended my arm onto the table and took the glass of water. As I felt the liquid flow down my throat, I felt quite relieved.
“Soleil!”
Before I could see my best friend approaching, the water splashed onto my face down to my bed cover as she gave me a hug without thinking I was drinking.
“Elodie!” I glared at her.
“W-What?! I just thought you’re not gonna wake up Sol! You made me worried!” I hear her sobs that quickly melt my upset face, and as I process her words my eyes slowly widen.
“Y-You mean it happened?” I asked. No, it cannot be, that man did not save me.
“Why? Did you expect it to be a dream, Sol? That’s insane, you almost died! But…”
A taunting smile popped out of her face, showing her two dimples on each side of her cheeks.
“A knight in shining armor wearing a white uniform saved you! The amazing Blaise Toussaint! Our new classmate Sol! Can you process that huh? He saved you with his two-muscled arms…”
Elodie didn’t finish her sentence when Mom entered my room.
“What’s going on here, ladies?”
“Aunt Mika!” Elodie dashed out of my sight and greeted my mother. “You wouldn’t believe what just happened Aunt!”
“Elodie stop. Don’t waste my mom’s time…”
“Sol finally met her soulmate!”
“That’s nonsense!” I interrupted and glared at her.
“Oh…” My mom’s face became interested as a small grin flashed on her lips, and her eyes glanced at me in an interrogating manner.
“Who’s the lucky guy Elodie? Go on!”
“Well… you wouldn’t believe Aunt, he is the most handsome human being I’ve ever seen, or was he really even a human?” Elodie started her epic description, and I’m tired of hearing it so I grabbed a pillow instead put it on my head, and dived onto my bed. I gritted my teeth when she grabbed it away from me.
“What’s wrong with you El!”
“Oh c’mon Sol you have to hear this!”
“I mean, he could be a vampire…or a werewolf for his amazing physique if you’re watching Twilight, plus he’s tall and...”
“El that’s enough. The breakfast is ready, Soleil.” I shifted my glance at my mom; I had never heard her voice as commanding as this. She’s always gentle, and calm. Elodie bit her lip, and let out an awkward smile before shutting her mouth.
Or so I thought…
Because when mom was about to leave the room she spoke again…
“But Aunt Mika! He saved Sol’s life yesterday!” Oh God, how did I end up being her best friend, again?
“He saves you, Sol?” That question seemed to send a volt of energy to El and she was on again; her eyes seemed to have an imaginary heart animation on them like an emoji on my phone before she stood up and positioned herself in the opposite direction like how Blaise was in the crossroad yesterday.
“Sol was about to cross the road, with Blaise our classmate on the opposite side. When a big bike was fast approaching…” I closed my eyes as a flash of memories came to my senses. I could still hear the fast heartbeat, and how everyone stopped from what they were doing to watch me die…except him.
“He ran as fast as he could before the big bike could hit her. I can’t imagine how fast his reflexes are though, he’s like a thunder. And aaaaaaaaah! He holds her like this…”
I could visualize the details of his face, from his emerald eyes down to the bridge of his aristocratic nose. His lips were enough plump and a bit dampened until…
“Then he lifted her like this Aunt before he put her inside her car!”
“Ouch! Elodie!” I just found myself lying on the floor with Elodie.”
“Oh I’m sorry Sol, I just want Aunt Mika to visualize it!” But I paused for a moment to verify what I heard.
“He put me in his car?” I asked.
“With me of course. That scene is too much for you, you should share some with me.”
“So he did!?” Elodie rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, he just did Sol.”
When I heard my door shut, that’s when I realized that my mom was gone. Damn, I’m doomed.
“Why is your face like that? Aren’t you excited for tomorrow when you meet again huh?”
“You should go home El, I have a pile of work to do.”
“Oh, alright Soleil! See you tomorrow.” My best friend knew me well, with the tone of my voice she knew that I had to deal with something alone. After hearing her bid her farewell to my mom, I slumped my face on my bed sheet and screamed. Before standing up and dragging my feet to the kitchen where I found my mom sitting in front of the dining table, without touching any of her food.
“Soleil.” That stern voice of my mother, I didn’t want to hear it again. My feet and gaze were both stuck on the floor before I got the courage to look at her.
“M-Mom.” I couldn’t trace any hint of emotion on her face, it was fully void. I couldn’t think what was running in her mind right now.
“Stop making a scene in your university Soleil. Stop attracting everyone’s attention.”
“W-What? I’m not attracting everyone’s attention…”
“Yes, you are, just study and mind your own business.” She added.
My forehead creased. “You know Mom, I’m sick of this. I kept obeying…”
“Because that's what you should do, Soleil.” She cuts me off and moves her finger to touch the spoon and fork.
“I couldn’t understand mom, you made me wear these thick glasses even though I don’t have any eyesight problems. You don’t want me to participate in any activities in schools, or even compete. It seems like you don’t want me to have a social life…”
“You’ll live longer that way Soleil.”
“Still I don’t understand…”
“That’ 's the last question I’ll entertain from you, and this would be the last conversation that we’ll talk about this Soleil.”
“It’s either you obey me, or you’ll put yourself in danger.” She stands up and looks at me straight in my eyes. I never saw this side of her, just now.
“Do you understand Soleil?” A tear escaped my eyes, am I living in jail? But I love my mom, and I owe everything to her. I slowly nod my head in submission.
“I’m doing this for your own good Soleil.” She whispered before she passed me by. But before she leaves the door…
“Sol, one last thing…”
“Stay away from that transfer guy.”
