In the night.
Heavy rain poured down, accompanied by flashes of lightning and rumbling thunder.
Kaitlyn Pierce dragged her suitcase and walked aimlessly in the rain.
“Kait, Adam didn’t divorce you just because he won five million in the lottery; it’s because you failed to fulfill your duties as a wife.”
“Kaitlyn, are you serious? I wanted to bring up the divorce a long time ago. You don’t want to leave, and want a share of the assets too?”
It was hard to tell whether the wetness on her face was from the rain or her tears.
Her vision blurred as her emotions overwhelmed her.
Out of nowhere, a silver Bentley roared down the street, speeding in her direction. Kaitlyn, lost in her heartbreak, didn’t notice until the headlights were nearly upon her.
By the time her brain registered the danger, she froze, rooted in place as the car hurtled toward her.
SCREECH!
The Bentley swerved sharply, revealing the driver’s skill, but it was going too fast and accidentally crashed into the guardrail.
Kaitlyn stood there, her heart racing.
After crashing, the Bentley went silent.
It was late at night, and the area was quiet, with no other vehicles around.
Kaitlyn stood still for a few seconds before realizing what had happened. She quickly wiped the tears from her face and dropped her suitcase, sprinting toward the silver Bentley.
The interior was pitch-black. Pressing herself against the window, she could make out a man slumped over the steering wheel.
She pounded on the glass. "Sir! Sir, are you okay?"
No matter what, he crashed while trying to avoid her. If he was hurt, she would be responsible!
After a moment, she heard a faint click. Kaitlyn wasted no time and opened the car door, leaning in to check on him. “Are you alright? Ah…” Her voice cracked, still laced with tears.
Before she could finish, the man’s hand shot out like iron, grabbing her arm and yanking her inside.
Bang!
The door slammed shut, locking them in.
Kaitlyn tumbled onto the man’s lap, feeling his hot hand like a steel chain around her waist, leaving her unable to move.
“Let... let go of me…” she stammered, sensing danger.
“Do you have a death wish?”
The man’s deep, gravelly voice was like aged whiskey, smooth yet dangerously potent.
Kaitlyn froze for a few seconds, then realized he was referring to her standing in the middle of the road. She quickly shook her head. “I... I didn’t mean to!”
“Whether you meant it or not, you walked right into this. Don’t blame me…” With that, he lifted her and positioned her on his lap.
Feeling his dominance, Kaitlyn’s head spun, and she stuttered, "W-what are you going to do?"
He smirked. "What do you think?"
The rain had poured all night, as if cleansing the city of its sins.
After a night of chaos…
Inside the car, the man stirred. Aaron Finch's sharp, intense eyes snapped open as he sat up.
The air still carried the sweet, cloying scent left by that woman. He surveyed the empty vehicle, his expression darkening when he realized the woman was gone.
She ran away?
His gaze dropped to the crimson stain on the seat, his eyes narrowing with a mix of frustration and something harder to place. What a mess!
He called his assistant, Ben Harper, coldly ordering, "Trace my location immediately. Find out who that woman was last night."
After speaking, he hung up the phone without waiting for his assistant to process what he had said.
Kaitlyn had fled in the dead of night, taking advantage of the heavy rain to return home, looking disheveled.
In her years of marriage, she had never shared a bed with her husband. Yet tonight, she had been with a stranger. The thought made her panic, her chest tightening as she replayed the events over and over.
When she woke up, her instinct was to run.
“Kait.”
Her mother, Rebecca Pierce, entered, bringing her a cup of ginger tea.
“Thank you, Mom.”
“Are you and Adam really done for good?”
Mentioning Adam Harris, Kaitlyn lowered her gaze, sipping the tea absentmindedly, clearly not wanting to discuss it further.
“Divorce is for the best; after all, your father has arranged another marriage for you.”
Kaitlyn’s heart sank, and she looked up sharply. “Mom?”
“Although the man has a leg disability, but considering you’ve already been divorced, you shouldn’t be too picky."
“Mom, what are you talking about?”
Rebecca stood up abruptly, her face filled with anger as she glared at her. “The marriage is set for a month from now. Whether you want to or not, you must marry.”
“I just divorced Adam tonight; how did you know?” Kaitlyn felt a chill creeping into her heart.
"To be honest, the marriage was originally meant for your sister. But since you’re divorced now, you’ll take her place."
Her mother’s voice softened slightly, as if to justify her decision. "The man has a disability, Kait. We can’t let both of Pierce family’s daughters’ futures be ruined."
A sharp pang of pain shot through Kaitlyn’s chest. Her hands shook as she clutched the ginger tea. Her lips quivered. "Mom, I’m your own blood—"
“Zoey is your own younger sister! Can you bear to see her suffer?”
“What about me?”
“Regardless, this matter is settled. A month from now, you must marry into the Finch family! If both Pierce family daughters are ruined, your father and I won’t be able to live with ourselves.”
On the day of her wedding, Kaitlyn’s sister, Zoey Pierce, came to Kaitlyn with a guilty expression.
"Kait, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen, but Mom—"
Kaitlyn’s gaze pierced her like a dagger. "Sorry? If you’re so sorry, why don’t you wear the wedding dress and marry him yourself?"
“Kait, I…” Zoey clenched her fists, biting her lip, then finally relaxed her hands, defeated. "I have a boyfriend, but you… you’re already divorced.”
Kaitlyn turned away, lowering her gaze. “Yeah, I’m already divorced… You take care of Mom and Dad. They’ve done everything to make me agree to this.”
Marrying someone with a leg disability meant she’d have to care for him for life. If this was her fate, she could accept it.
But it was supposed to be Zoey Pierce’s fate, while she, Kaitlyn Pierce, after experiencing her husband’s betrayal, returning to her family, was to seek some comfort.
Instead, she learned she had to replace her sister in marrying into the Finch family.
Just because the man had a leg disability, her parents didn’t want Zoey to suffer.
What about her? Just because she was divorced, she had to endure this suffering?
How ridiculous! But those were her parents who raised her; she had to accept it.
The Finch family prepared an extravagant ceremony. After a complicated wedding, Kaitlyn, marrying in place of Zoey, had been brainwashed by her parents beforehand.
Though no one knew her, she felt guilty and kept her head down throughout the process, trying to avoid drawing attention.
Fortunately, the groom was in a wheelchair and exuded a cold aura that could freeze the wedding venue, so most people’s attention was on him.
Although the wedding was grand, it was relatively simple; Aaron didn’t toast, and everyone was too intimidated by his presence to disturb him.
After the ceremony, Kaitlyn was sent to the bridal room.
An older maid entered, asserting her authority. “Young Mistress, although our Young Master has a leg disability, he is still the Young Master of the Finch family. After marrying him, you must take good care of him.”
Ever since that night in the rain when her mother told her she had to replace Zoey in marrying into the Finch family, Kaitlyn had developed a fever the next day and spent several days recovering.
Her condition fluctuated, lingering until today when she finally put on her wedding dress after taking cold medicine.
Her eyelids felt heavy, and after hearing the maid’s words, she nodded repeatedly. “I understand. Can I rest for a bit?”
She was about to collapse.
The maid looked at her with disdain, muttering under her breath as she left.
Once she was gone, Kaitlyn didn’t care that she was in a wedding dress and fell asleep face-first.
In her dreams, it felt as if sharp eyes were watching her face, which was strange.

Kaitlyn opened her sleepy eyes.
And was met with a pair of deep, cold eyes.
The man in the wheelchair had sharp, angular features—his deep-set, wolf-like eyes radiated danger, a high-bridged nose sat above thin, tightly pressed lips. Although he sat in a wheelchair, he radiated an oppressive aura that made it clear he was not to be approached.
“Zoey?”
Kaitlyn was stunned for a moment before quickly sitting up in bed, looking at the man in confusion.
She nodded nervously.
She had come to marry into the Finch family in place of Zoey, so she naturally dared not reveal her true identity.
“Hmph.” Aaron’s eyes narrowed coldly. He pulled an envelope from his pocket and tossed it in front of Kaitlyn. Cautiously, she picked it up and opened it, discovering photos and information about her sister, Zoey.
It seemed he had thoroughly researched the woman he was supposed to marry.
But why hadn’t he said anything during the wedding?
Kaitlyn tightened her grip on the envelope, biting her lip. She glanced at Aaron with her glassy black eyes, trying to remain composed.
“Does the Pierce family think that just because I, Aaron Finch, have a leg disability, I can settle for anyone?”
Kaitlyn stood up, her long dress trailing behind her. With her head lowered, she spoke softly, “I am also a daughter of the Pierce family.”
“A recently divorced daughter? Does the Pierce family think the Finch family is a dumping ground?”
His blunt words made Kaitlyn feel as if she could barely hold herself up. She bit her lip hard; a divorced woman was indeed looked down upon, and that was precisely why her parents had forced her into this marriage.
Before she could explain further, Aaron’s icy tone cut through the air like a blade.
“You have five minutes to explain yourself and get out of the Finch family.”
What?
Kaitlyn quickly raised her eyes to meet his.
“No way!”
She couldn’t leave. If she confessed, it would ruin the Pierce family’s reputation and sever any ties with the influential Finch family. The Pierce family wouldn’t be able to survive in this city of Cicely after that.
Kaitlyn steadied herself, lifting the hem of her wedding dress as she approached Aaron. “My sister has a boyfriend. She wouldn’t willingly marry into the Finch family.”
“So, you took it upon yourself to marry in her place?” Aaron’s lips curled into a mocking smile, glaring at her.
Gathering her courage, Kaitlyn met his icy gaze.
“I know this is just a marriage of convenience which was arranged by my parents. To you, it doesn’t matter who you marry—otherwise, you wouldn’t have agreed in the first place.”
She wasn’t sure if her words would sway him.
“Instead of going through this whole process again, why not let me stay? I promise I won’t interfere with your life.” As she spoke, Kaitlyn raised her hands in assurance, her eyes filled with determination and courage, though her pale face showed her apprehension about his rejection.
Something about her demeanor...
Aaron narrowed his eyes, sizing her up.
Finally, he scoffed, “I can find any kind of women that I want, better than you. Why would I want a woman like you?”
Her face drained of color. His words were merciless. Before she could respond, he turned his wheelchair and started to leave.
She hesitated for a moment, wanting to follow, but his subordinates blocked her path.
“Miss Kaitlyn, please maintain your dignity!”
Watching Aaron’s cold, indifferent figure retreat, Kaitlyn felt desperate and shouted after him, “If you don’t let me stay, I’ll tell everyone you’re... a degenerate!”
The grenade had been thrown; Kaitlyn had laid everything on the line.
Her words made Aaron pause momentarily, and though he didn’t move, he turned his head slightly, cold light flaring in his eyes as he spoke in a voice that seemed to come from hell, “Who did you say is a degenerate?”
Aaron’s dangerous gaze was like a beast lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce and tear her apart if she dared to say another word.
What was happening? Kaitlyn swallowed hard. How could someone confined to a wheelchair radiate such oppressive energy?
There was no turning back for Kaitlyn.
She gritted her teeth, fists clenched, defiantly meeting Aaron’s gaze.
“Unless you let me stay.”
Aaron’s assistant, Ben Harper, stood nearby, slack-jawed. He hadn’t expected this seemingly timid woman to provoke the formidable Aaron so fearlessly.
Aaron adjusted his wheelchair’s direction, slowly approaching her, his eyes dark and penetrating.
Instinctively, Kaitlyn took two steps back.
The seated Aaron quickly closed the distance. In one swift motion, he grabbed her slender wrist, his grip firm and unyielding.
“What did you just say? Say that again!” he said coldly, his sharp gaze locking onto hers.
“Let go of me…”
His sudden closeness sent Kaitlyn into a panic, enveloped by his intense masculine aura.
Overbearing, dangerous.
This feeling…
It reminded Kaitlyn of that night a month ago.
The man in the car had exuded an equally domineering aura.
Kaitlyn’s complexion paled further as memories of that night rushed back.
That night was a humiliation for her.
“Are you really so desperate to become Mrs. Finch?”
Startled, Kaitlyn was pulled back to reality by his voice, her eyes widening.
A thin sheen of sweat formed on her forehead. “You went along with this wedding too, didn’t you? You knew I wasn’t Zoey, yet you didn’t expose me during the ceremony.”
“So what?”
“Just let me go.” Kaitlyn pushed against him.
“Hmph.” Aaron sneered, “A divorced woman acting so high-strung? Haven’t you done this before?”
Kaitlyn defiantly met his gaze.
“Don’t push me too far!”
“If you want to stay,” he said with a chilling smirk, “then entertain me.”
His disdain was palpable. To him, Kaitlyn was just another woman scheming for wealth and status, like many others he had encountered.
Her face turned ashen, her lips trembling as she struggled to respond.
“What’s wrong?” he taunted, gripping her chin firmly. His deep voice was laced with mockery. “It’s not that I’m incapable. It’s that you’re utterly repulsive.”
With that, he pushed her away.
Kaitlyn stumbled backward, leaning against the door, looking at Aaron in distress.
Aaron instructed his assistant to push him away, and Kaitlyn watched their retreating figures, biting her lip.
Had she succeeded?
Would she be allowed to stay?
Kaitlyn touched her sore chin, returning to the bedroom.
Ten minutes passed in silence.
When no one came to throw her out, Kaitlyn let out a shaky sigh of relief. It seemed she had won this round.
