I watched my mother in awe as she slammed a piece of paper in front of me. It was the first day of summer vacation, and she was already pissed at me. I wish my dad wasn't gone on his business trips so much, so he would keep her sane.
''What's this?’’ I asked with my mouth full of Lucky Charms cereal.
'THIS is your report card from sophomore year, princess.''
I hated to be called princess. It made me sound girly, which I was not. I loved to skateboard instead of going shopping, I loved to read books instead of partying and going out with friends and I definitely loved playing with my dog instead of making out with some guy. I tried it once, at a party, and I almost ended up in the hospital because I choked on his tongue.
''So?’’ I asked again, leaning in to see what she was pointing at.
''Nothing above B.''
''Look at it this way, nothing below C except English.''
She pulled the sheet of paper back, making a disgusted face. Oh, how she loved playing the drama queen.
''You're drooling milk all over the paper.” she spat.
''Well if it's such a shitty report card, then why do you care?’’ I mumbled wiping the table off with my sleeve.
''Because you're average.''
I gulped down the cereal, almost having a heart attack when it went down the wrong pipe. ''Is that a bad thing?''
She expected me to be perfect. Like those girly girls you would see on TV with loads of makeup, hair extensions, and grades as high as their heels. I wore makeup because I got insecure about my face and body (who didn’t?) and sometimes I would dye my hair in different colors, but I would never wear extensions. Imagine choking on fake hair as the wind slaps you in the face. No thank you.
''I want you to be above average.” she continued, picking at a stain of dirt on the table.
''You mean perfect.’’ I corrected her, slightly angry that she com-plained. I could be doing drugs or shag a guy every night. Didn't she realize how lucky she was?
She opened her mouth to say something, but I cut her off by jumping up from my seat and pulling my sweatshirt down. Oh, and she hated the fact that I wore sweatshirts. It was too 'boyish' for her. Ever since my brother left for college two years ago (he was the perfect kid by the way), she wanted to turn me into him.
Sometimes she would tell me I'm useless- which to be quite honest I was- but it didn't bother me. I never really cared about other people's opinions.
''Well school's over already so there's nothing you can do about it. Now can I go out and skate-''
''I've had enough of your moods, Delilah!''
I winced at her calling me by my middle name. Not many people knew about my middle name, mainly because I hated it. But my mother didn't care about my humiliation, she always called me 'Delilah' when she was angry, which was all the time.
''What moods mother?’’ I spat annoyed.
''You're constantly grumpy! Maybe you should get some friends!''
I pressed my lips into a thin line. She did not. Fuck you, I thought as I stomped up the stairs, slamming the door behind me. I jumped on my bed and yelling into my pillow as loud as I could, getting all my anger out. This was going to be a long summer.
Two hours later, I was on my bed, with the laptop on my lap, browsing through my Tumblr dashboard. A lot of teen-agers saw the summer as an opportunity to have fun, go to parties, and get drunk. I, however, spent my summers inside on my MacBook, occasionally going out just to skateboard or on a walk with Tony, my Bulldog puppy.
"Renee Delilah Parker get your arse down here this very second!” my mother screamed from downstairs.
I loudly groaned and stomped down the stairs, angry that she made me go up and down the stairs five times an hour.
"What now?"
"Take a seat,” she said pointing to the seat, the one I’d previously sat on. I crossed my arms over my chest, raising my eyebrows, not moving from my spot in the doorframe.
"What."
"You're going to spend your summer at your grandma's, in Mullingar."
"No, I'm not,” I spoke, poking the inside my cheek with my tongue.
"We're leaving with the bus in two days."
"I'm not leaving...no,” I muttered. When, how, why and who made this decision? I was not going to go to Ireland, I mean, leave London and go to a small town I'm not a bitch, don't get me wrong, but I could bet my skateboard there was no Wi-Fi and no skate park whatsoever.
"You are and it's final."
"And what if I don't?"
"I will confiscate your laptop, phone, dog, skateboard, books, and iPod for the rest of the summer."
"But-"
"Your choice princess."
I wanted to smack her head into a wall. Why did she have to be so annoying? Ugh, I hated her sometimes "You better go pack,” she sang in that high-pitched voice of hers and I bit my lip, holding back an exasperated scream. This was going to be a long summer.
***
"Moooom,” I whined for the fourth time on the bus ride from the Ferryboat to Mullingar.
"What?” she snapped.
"Can you PLEASE give me something to eat? I'm starving."
She looked down at me, raising one of her eyebrows. "You sure? Cause you've been getting a bit curvy lately."
It was like a stab to my chest. She could insult me on my behavior, my grades, and my fashion sense, but not on my weight. That was a sensitive subject for me since I had an Eating Disorder when I was 12.
"Nevermind,” I mumbled. There it was again, the feeling of needing to lose weight. If I relapsed and started starving myself again, I wasn't going to be able to stop.
We arrived in a taxi at my grandma's house an hour later. The street was nice, it had tidy lawns and perfect houses, like those you saw in the typical American movies.
The houses did not have a fence whatsoever, I guess people were comfortable with each other in the neighborhood.
"OHMYGOD REYREY!"
I cringed at the high-pitched voice coming from the house next to me. My lovely (slutty) cousin Katherine (who likes to be called Kitty because she was-and I quote- "Like an animal in bed") made her way towards me, in her short pink skirt, her pink high heels, and her white crop top.
She clearly had extensions, because her hair cascaded down her shoulders and almost reached her bum. She wore a lot of makeup and smelled like cigarettes, boy cologne, and some really girly perfume that made your eyes (and nose) bleed.
I noticed she had A LOT of tattoos. A lot of things change in a year I see...
"Hiiiiiiiiiiiii!” she said hugging me. She had to lean down so she could kiss both of my cheeks. Her tall 5'9 (in heels) frame towered over my small 5'2.
"Oh god your tits are bigger! And you gained some weight! Wow!"
I scrunched my nose. Another weight comment. And my tits are bigger? Wow, she was such a slag.
My grandmother came out with a baseball bat in her hand, wearing her usual Adidas outfit, followed by my frowning grandfather, who had his hands in his pockets and a pipe in his mouth.
"Delilah! How lovely that you will spend your summer here!” grandma said and hugged me. Why was she calling me by my middle name? She knew I didn't like it. And what was up with the baseball bat? Was she on drugs?
"What's with the bat mom?” my mother asked as grandpa helped her with the suitcases. We paid the taxi driver and grandpa went inside with the luggage, mumbling about how I was carrying rocks, whilst 'us girls'-as Katherine said- sat on the front porch, catching up on some 'girl talk'.
"How is Katherine doing?” my mom opened up a discussion.
"Who?” I asked confused.
Grandma pointed with her bat to the house across from us. "She's good, but her younger son is driving them insane. She got married last year."
"Little Niall?” my mom asked in disbelief.
I had no idea what they were talking about. Who was Little Niall?
"Ha!” grandma snorted swinging her bat, almost hitting a flowerpot. She was crazy, that’s for sure. I pulled my legs up on the chair and my eyes drifted to Katherine's lap. She had her phone in hand and she was texting someone. I almost gasped when I saw the text she just received.
u shud send me another naked pic babe ;) gets me hard every time Who was she talking to? Oh my God.
"He's not Little Niall anymore. You should see him; he's like 6'3. Those innocent blue eyes are now darker and that short brown hair he had is now either pink, purple, green, blue, or blond. And it's sticking in every direction when it's not under one of his dirty caps. And his arms! Oh God! He always wears tank tops, showing off his disgusting tattoos. His arms and chest are full. I'm not going to continue, I might gag."
"Wow.” my mother breathed. "Sounds awful."
"It is. And he's always home late, making a lot of noise when he's drunk with a lady companion attached to his hip. And he rides a motorcycle."
"A what?” my mom asked in disbelief.
"He has a motorcycle.,” my grandma said in an oh-my-god-you-will-not-believe-this tone. "And he's creeping all day, sitting on his porch smoking or drinking. I think he's watching young girls around the neighborhood changing in their rooms. And don't even get me started on his tongue."
I looked at her, shocked. His tongue?
"He has a tongue piercing, and a lip piercing and a brow piercing! It's so disgusting! I mean it's not enough that he speaks with disrespect to everyone, but he also has that metal in his mouth, I don't even know how he eats. Oh, and his cute crooked teeth? They're straight now; he wore braces for two years. Trust me, girls, he's never going to step on my ground."
Mom gasped and I rolled my eyes. However, I disliked this Niall character, he seemed intimidating, and I would for sure be all shy around him, that is if I would ever meet him, which I didn't plan to.
"So that's why you're carrying a bat mom?” my mother asked her mother.
Grandma nodded. "You never know with that guy. He's scum."
After that, mom went to bed because she left early in the morning, and grandma offered to make us some tea-which we kindly denied because her teas were the worst-, leaving me and Katherine alone on the love seat.
"He's not that bad you know."
"Who?"
"Niall."
I shrugged.
I don't know him, I don't care about him and I don't plan on meeting him.
"He's like, cool, really cool, and he's like hot you know? Like, really hot."
What was with the word 'like'? Was she retarded or something? I mean, I know her parents died when she was little so she lived with her grandparents but that doesn't give her the right to speak like that or to show me a picture of a-
"Penis!” I said covering my eyes.
She let out a high-pitched laugh, touching her chest with her manicured nails that were the color pink, shocker.
"God, you need to be more mature. Some may think you are a virgin."
That's because I am you bitch.
She pointed to the penis on her phone; it was long, sitting up, and- hard.
"This is Niall."
My mouth fell agape as I looked elsewhere. She announced that she had closed the photo so I looked back at her. Where did the innocent girl from a year ago go? The girl I would paint my toenails and look through Ikea catalogs with? She changed.
"So you know Niall?"
"I've been friends with him since I was fifteen. And a year ago I've become...” she trailed off.
"Become what?” I pushed, actually eager to find out what she was talking about.
"Friends with benefits,” she whispered, her candy breath hitting my face. I wouldn't be surprised if she pooped rainbows and burped fairy dust.
"What's that?” I asked confused. What the hell did that mean? Don't laugh at me, I've never heard of it.
She laughed. "It means when you're having sex with someone but there are no strings attached. No feelings. And you’re not together, which means you can hook up with a lot of people. But basically, you fuck with your FWB more than with those other people, like girl, you got a problem."
What? ‘Girl’? Was she on crack? God, it's like she's a whole different person now. I hated it.
"So what do you do in your spare time in this little town?” I asked leaning into the loveseat, trying to make myself comfortable. I could hear the crickets so I closed my eyes for a second.
"Well, we have Wi-Fi if that's why you're asking. But there's a lot you can do. There's a big aqua park, the beach is an hour away, we go every Saturday. And there's a skate park if you're interested...and a public pool...and at night we go to parties."
"We?” I asked confused. She couldn't mean grandma, could she?
"The whole neighborhood. Niall, Jade, Jake, and I."
I knew all of them, except for Niall. I mean, I used to see him on the playground in the summer when we were kids, but that was ten years ago. I remember his crooked teeth, his blue eyes and-
My train of thoughts was interrupted when I heard a motorcycle coming down the street. It was a guy, and he had a black Motorhead helmet and a black leather jacket on. He stopped in the driveway across the street and got off the motorcycle, before taking his helmet off and ruffling his hair.
His hair was blonde with pink highlights. His dark jeans hugged his long, skinny legs perfectly and his white Vans were now grey. He looked over at us before he did a double-take.
He shot Katherine a quick wave and winked at her before his eyes landed on me. I felt uncomfortable and self-conscious as he stared before he put his helmet on the motorcycle’s handles and started walking towards us.
I shifted uncomfortably in my seat as he set his legs on our porch and came over. Katherine squealed and stood up. Even with her heels on, he was still taller than her.
I was surprised when they kissed each other, and I almost gagged when I saw his right hand go under her skirt.
"Sit down Ni,” she said and he took her place, pulling her over his lap. I tried to ignore the fact that his knee was touching mine.
"Who are you?” he asked.
His voice was husky and had a very strong Irish accent. I noticed a tongue piercing in his mouth, just like my grandma said. His usual crooked teeth were straight now and his hair was thick, flying in every direction, his brown roots barely visible.
He smelled like cigarettes and cologne, which, may I add, was a total turn off. Not that I knew much about it.
He was intimidating and made me blush when he looked down at me, at my cleavage to be more specific. Not that I showed too much, because I was wearing a Justin Bieber sweatshirt.
"You like Justin Bieber?” he asked in a mocking tone.
He was talking to me. His breath smelled like cigarettes. He turned to Katherine.
"Is she mute?"
Katherine rolled her eyes and swung her legs over my lap too. Ew. No.
"I'm Renee."
"Renee?"
"Renee Delilah Parker,” Katherine said and I wanted to strangle right then and there. This was so embarrassing.
"Delilah?"
I nodded, my cheeks heating up. Then his eyes drifted to my cheeks, my cleavage my thighs, and came back to my eyes. Then he turned to Katherine.
"We going, babe?"
She nodded and he stood up, setting her on her feet.
"If grandma asks, I'm out with Jade."
I nodded. Niall didn't even bother to look back at me. He simply walked down the street to his motorcycle and put his helmet on. She climbed on behind him, hugging his torso.
I spoke before I could think:
"Shouldn't you give her your helmet?"
They looked at me. She laughed and he spoke, without turning his head:
"No one wears this helmet."
And with that, he took off, the sounds of his motorcycle now a distant echo in the darkness. I sighed and stood up, before I went inside to find my grandfather watching Wheel Of Fortune and my grandma in the kitchen, looking out the window.
"The Shelley's are fighting again,” she spoke without looking at me. Her neck was stretched out and she was sipping from her cup as she watched the two adults yelled at each other in their backyard.
That's when I knew that my grandmother was that one lady that always knew the latest gossip of the neighborhood.
I changed into my pajamas and slipped under the duvet. My mom luckily let me bring my laptop with me, and I had free Wi-Fi from the house across the street. It was named 'Niall’, but as long as he didn't know about me using his free Internet, no harm would be done.
I sat on Tumblr the whole night, and it was around midnight when I walked over to the desk in my room to set the laptop down. The roar of the motorcycle's engine was heard on the street before it came to a halt.
I looked outside to see Niall taking off his helmet and Katherine trying to arrange her messed up hair.
But there was another girl with them. She was wearing a tight tube dress, her blonde hair cascading down her back.
Niall bent down and I was shocked to see that they kissed...all of them.
He had his arms around both of their shoulders, his hands squeezing one of each girl's asscheek. How could he do that? It was disgusting.
Then he pulled away, licking his lips. Katherine waved at them and came towards our porch, whilst Niall threw his arm around the other girls' shoulder. They walked towards his house and I closed the curtains, not wanting to see more.
It was my first day here and I already disliked Niall.
Great.
***
The next day was Tuesday, and my mom left when I woke up. I wasn't looking forward to this day or any other day of this summer for that matter.
I slowly made my way down the stairs, in a tank top and my pajama shorts. I was too lazy to actually brush my hair, but I brushed my teeth, just in case I bumped into Niall, which was stupid because he wouldn't be at my house at 11 am.
I sat down on a chair in the kitchen, wishing my grandmother, grandfather, and Katherine a good morning.
My grandma was staring out the window, drinking her morning coffee, commenting on everyone that walked past our window, my grandpa was reading the paper, mumbling how everyone was a hypocrite and he hated everything, and Katherine was doing her nails.
I slowly prepared myself some cereal, before leaning against the counter. The whole kitchen smelled like nail polish and coffee.
My eyes subconsciously drifted to the window, but then did a double-take. I saw Niall crouching down on his lawn, next to his motorcycle, looking at it. His hair was almost blond now; the pink streaks barely showing anymore.
He wiped his forehead as he stood up, only to reveal that he wasn't wearing a shirt. His naked torso seemed endless, and he had a clear six-pack.
But his skin was covered in tattoos, as were his arms. They stopped at his shoulders. I pried my eyes off him and focused on my cereal.
I finished them soon, before setting the bowl into the sink and attempting to go upstairs.
"Hold it!” my grandmother yelled and I groaned, turning around to see what she wanted.
"Why don't you show her around Kat?"
Katherine and I both looked at each other before she smiled and nodded. "Sure."
But I just wanted to stay inside and watch some movies; was it too much to ask? I didn't want to be here, I never asked for this. What was I supposed to do here anyway?
I sighed and went upstairs to change. I really didn't want to go anywhere...especially with Katherine.
She told me to be ready in ten, obviously because she needed time to put makeup on. I pulled on some shorts and a hoodie, before going downstairs.
"Can I bring my skateboard?” I asked Katherine as she came down the stairs, wearing a pair of white wedges, some booty shorts, and a tight white crop.
She shrugged. "Whatever."
I grabbed the skateboard that was leaning against the wall and put my flowery Ray-Bans on.
"And watch out for Niall! Don't go near him!” grandma yelled as we exited the house. She was planning on sitting out on the porch and ‘reading’ the paper. I rolled my eyes at her and set the board at my feet, before placing my foot on it. Katherine frowned as she eyed my outfit.
I set my second foot on the board, waiting for a direction. She nodded forwards and I idly skated next to her. We both knew that she wasn't going to show me around; I knew the place.
But she seemed to know where she was going.
"Where are we going?” I asked looking around the deserted street, illuminated by the hot sun.
"Skate park,” she said and my heart started beating faster.
There will be cool people there and I’m not going to fit in.
And Katherine's presence wasn't calming me down, to be honest. I immediately asked myself if Niall would be there.
Maybe.
I was curious to see if he was actually skateboarding or if he had a BMX.
I leaned on the end of the skateboard as I came to a halt in front of the gate. Katherine pushed it open and I held my skateboard as we walked towards the big ramps. They went down and there were also some grind bars. A small kiosk was in the corner.
About fifteen people were there. I spotted Niall immediately, chatting up a dirty blonde-haired girl. He leaned against the handlebar of his orange BMX. She was twirling a stray of hair around her index finger and laughed at something he said.
He turned his head and then did a double-take when he saw us. Katherine winked at him and he excused himself, before setting his Supra covered feet on the pedals. He was wearing jeans and a long-sleeved grey shirt. His hair was blonde, and his pink highlights reappeared.
"Hi,” he said smirking. He didn't bother to get up from the BMX. He was obviously waiting for Katherine to bend down and kiss him, which would give him an eyeful of her boobs. I awkwardly stood there, looking away, but hearing the sounds that came from their mouths.
I wondered how it felt to have someone's tongue against yours if it felt as good as they said.
"Wouldn't you like to join us in a three-way kiss?” Niall asked cockily and I gasped, turning around to face him. His eyebrows were raised, and he was still waiting for my answer.
"She's a virgin...and she didn't even get her first kiss,” Katherine informed him.
Who did she think she was? Sharing a detail about my life! I wanted to yell at her but held myself back.
Niall’s gaze was unreadable. His piercing, dark blue eyes were making a hole into mine as he lazily wrapped an arm around Katherine's leg. She ran a hand through his hair and he finally gave me a grin.
"A virgin?” he asked looking me up at down.
"Looks like one,” he admitted.
What did he mean I looked like one? I blushed and then I realized what he meant.
"So there's a bonfire tomorrow.,” he said rubbing her naked skin.
"You're coming?” Katherine asked taking a step forward, looking at me.
Niall’s eyes fell on her exposed butt cheeks and he bit his lip, before he licked his bottom lip, his pierced tongue running over his lip ring.
I shrugged. "I don't know."
He rolled his eyes and my eyes bulged out of their sockets as I saw him bite her exposed skin from her shorts. Katherine giggled and playfully slapped him across the cheek. He gave her a smirk and scratched his knee.
"I'm going home,” I said setting my skateboard on the ground.
He raised his eyebrows when he saw that I could actually skate. I felt their stares on my back as I rolled out of the park, down the long street. I looked around, trying to get used to the neighborhood before I crashed into someone.
I landed on my knees and scratched them. I swore as I stood up, cleaning the dirt off my naked legs. I looked up to see a guy with a cigarette between his fingers and a skateboard at his feet.
"Sorry,” I mumbled and he laughed.
"I've never seen you around here before."
"Because I'm from around here."
He extended his hand. "Sean."
I looked into his blue eyes as I shook his hand. "Rey."
He shot me a half-smirk as he set his foot on the skateboard. "See you around."
And then he skated down the street, towards the skate park.
I arrived home just in time for dinner, which I skipped. I watched the newest episode of Supernatural, and before I knew it, it was past 11 pm.
I got out of bed and went to take a shower.
First day here and it already sucks.
I came back into the room wrapped in a towel. I discarded the towel from my body and looked around for my PJ's. I found them by the window. I pulled the shorts on before I put on the tank top. My hair was released from my bun and I shook my head.
My phone vibrated on the bed and I bent over to pick it up. It was from an unknown number. I opened the text.
Unknown: damn.
My heart started beating faster as I realized there was an attachment to the text. I clicked on it and I almost fell into a grade eleven coma when I saw it was a picture of me naked, running a hand through my hair.
I looked outside and saw Niall on his balcony, sitting on a chair with the phone in his hand. He was watching me whilst smoking a cigarette.
He bit his lip suggestively and pointed to his crotch before he did a wanking gesture. My heart stopped and I blushed furiously.
My phone vibrated again.
Unknown: got ur # frm kitty ;)
I saved his contact into my phone and was about to close the curtains and hang myself when I saw him get up. He looked down at his phone and tapped his long, skinny fingers across the screen.
Niall: i know which picture ill wank 2 frm now on ;)
My heart was beating against my ribcage as I watched him locking eyes with me, smirking. He pulled the zipper to his pants down, his cigarette hanging from his lips.
I closed the curtains as I heavily breathed, staring down at my feet.
After I got into bed, I started thinking about what had just happened and how I could fix the fact that he had a naked picture of me.
And I got to a conclusion:
This was going to be a long summer.
Chapter 2 | Teenage Dirtbag
↓
The next morning I woke up to the memories from last night.
Niall saw me naked.
Niall actually saw me naked.
All I wanted to do was lay in bed and never have to wake up and face Niall or anyone ever again. But my wish went down the toilet the moment my lovely cousin barged into my room. Has she ever heard of a thing called ‘privacy’? I don’t think so.
“Ever heard of knocking?” I asked rolling onto my stomach, burying my face in my pillow.
“Someone’s not a morning person.”
I almost fell out of bed at the sound of his voice. Where was grandma? She was supposed to beat him with a bat. I pulled the duvet over my head and clenched my eyes shut, hoping that he would go away.
“We’re going to hang out at the skate park today, are you coming?” she asked and I shook my head. They couldn’t see me.
I heard a sigh and footsteps leaving the room. I sighed relieved but froze when the bed dipped next to me and the duvet was lifted, to be let go a few seconds later.
I kept my eyes closed, denying any scenario that plaid in my head.
“You are antisocial, aren’t you?”
I rolled over at his voice that was in my ear. His closeness made me blush as I sat up from the bed and pulled the blanket with me, rolling it around my frame.
“You’re wearing clothes, why do you bother covering up?” he asked with a smirk and rolled on his back, bending his left leg and hitching his right leg up to rest against his left knee.
His hair was now blond and green, and the piercing in his brow was gone. He was wearing jeans, white Supras, and a white V-neck which showed off a tattoo.
“Well, I have some dignity,” I replied, trying not to blush under his intimidating stare.
“It’s not like I haven’t seen it before.” he grinned and took his phone out.
My eyes widened when he stretched his right arm out for me to see the screen of his iPhone.
It was that picture of me, naked. I felt my cheeks burning and tried to get his phone, but he pulled it back and stuck it into his jeans.
“If you want it come and get it.”
I shook my head. “Please leave.”
He sat up and that’s when I realized that he was actually wearing the shitty Supras into bed. On the white sheets.
My grandma would flip shit.
“I need to get dressed,” I mumbled and tightened the hold on the duvet.
“I don’t mind.,” he said.
“Please.” I pathetically whined. To that, he stood up and walked towards me.
I took a step back but he was towering over me. I could practically taste his aftershave from where he was standing. The only thing I could see was his white shirt. He was at least a head taller than me.
I craned my neck to look up at him. He smiled and ran his tongue across his bottom lip, revealing his tongue piercing.
“You should stop being such a nun and have some fun.”
I made a face that he did not find amusing.
“Our definitions of fun differ,” I mumbled and he shot me a smirk before he turned around and left. My eyes were fixated on the back of his neck, more specifically on his neck tattoo. It was a black heart, kind of small.
I frowned, but he was already gone before I could question it.
I dressed up with a pair of shorts and a shirt, before I washed my teeth, brushed my hair, and did my makeup. I didn’t like people seeing me without makeup; I knew I was ugly. I spent a few minutes highlighting my brown hair with a dark purple color before I went back to my desk.
I grabbed my laptop with the intention of watching a movie outside on the front lawn in the lounge chair.
I set my MacBook on the table in the kitchen and tried to ignore the fact that Katherine was on the kitchen counter, and Niall was sucking her face off.
I tried to get to the box of cereals, but they were right in front of the cupboard. I coughed and Niall pulled away, wiping his lips with the back of his hand.
“Did you want to join?” he asked and smiled cockily.
I rolled my eyes. “I want to eat Lucky Charms.”
He smirked and grabbed his crotch, pushing it towards me.
“You can eat mine.”
I blushed and awkwardly looked at my feet.
“Just give her the cereal Niall.” Katherine giggled and he opened the cupboard, handing me the box.
I poured milk in a bowl and then the cereal before I sat down at the table.
“Where’s grandma?” I asked as I ate. Niall was tapping away on his phone and Katherine was picking at her nail polish.
“Our grandparents are at a garden sale until later in the afternoon.”
“Today’s the beach party.” Niall butted in, not looking up from his phone.
Katherine nodded.
“Wear a bikini.,” he added and I scoffed, before putting the bowl in the sink and grabbing the laptop from the table. They didn’t pay attention to me as I exited the room, then the house. I climbed down the stairs of the porch and went to sit on one of the two lounge chairs in the back garden.
I set the earphones in my ear and once again thanked God that I caught Niall’s Wi-Fi. I searched the site that I bookmarked and plaid the episode of Supernatural that I had to watch.
I mean, Dean was so hot, and Sam was so cute.
I licked my lips and looked up when someone’s shadow towered over my lounge chair. Niall was looking down at me, one hand on his hip and the other one on his skateboard.
“Whatcha watchin’, porn?”
My cheeks flamed as I shook my head, stopping the episode.
He set his skateboard on the ground and I resisted the urge to punch him when he pushed me aside, sitting down next to me on the chair.
“How do you even have Wi-Fi are you using my Wi-Fi?”
“Maybe.”
“You know it doesn’t have a password, right?” I asked. “You’re so stupid, you can’t protect your Wi-Fi and then you freak out.”
Shit. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that. He looked at me, anger visible in his eyes. I knew he was going to hurt me. I heard Katherine talking to her friend on the porch, saying that if someone ever stood up to Niall, he’d beat the shit out of them.
He got up from the chair and took the skateboard in his hand.
"We’ll see who’s stupider."
The person that uses stupider as the superlative for stupid, I thought but kept my mouth shut for safety reasons.
Grandma and grandpa got home around three after I finished watching six episodes of Supernatural. Katherine came around with a girl called Jade and all they did was talk about boys, nails, and Niall’s sexual experiences. Which was quite rude coming from them, because I was watching something and they just talked like I wasn’t even there.
Jade stayed for lunch, and grandma interrogated her about basically everything.
I learned that she was seventeen years old, had an older brother that was eighteen years old, Jake, and that she went to secondary school in Mullingar, together with Niall (apparently he repeated year 10).
As I helped grandma wash the dishes, she started talking about Niall again. Did everything revolve around Niall? I went to the grocery shop: “Niall Harris did this”; I went to throw out the trash: “Niall Harris licked that”. It was getting annoying.
"He’s eighteen, turning nineteen in September, and he’s starting year 11 again. He doesn’t care about school. People say that the teachers pass him just so they won’t get him the next year. But he’s terrible at math."
I didn’t care to be quite honest.
"I heard Primrose Shelley and Anna Starr talking at the garden sale…you should’ve heard the things they told me…he shags a different girl every night."
I almost dropped the plate. I did not care about Niall! Why did she feel the need to tell me about his sex life?
"So you two girls keep away from him, if I catch you with him, you’re grounded for a week."
"Don’t worry, that won’t be a problem for me,” I mumbled and dried my hands on a cloth, before turning away from grandma. She turned the tap off and looked at me.
"You should go and meet the other kids in the neighborhood. You shouldn’t stay in all day and do nothing."
"I’m watching a TV Show."
"Don’t you have summer assignments?"
"I do, but I’m starting tomorrow."
She shrugged before she remembered something:
"Oh! I need you to go buy your grandpa a pack of Kent cigarettes. How old are you?"
"Sixteen, grandma,” I mumbled and held my hand out for her to give me the money.
"They sell cigarettes at the grocery store."
I nodded and grabbed my skateboard from the wall. The city center was seven minutes by skateboard, and I had nothing better to do anyway.
I put on my cap and took off; stuffing the money grandma gave me in the back pocket of my jeans. I pushed my Ray-Bans further up my nose and gave myself a push with my left foot.
I skateboarded down the streets, watching people as they grilled in their gardens, mowed their lawns, and walked their dogs.
I passed by the bus station and turned left, before getting off my skateboard, since I was not allowed with it in the city center.
I set my skateboard down next to a familiar orange BMX, right in front of the grocery store grandma told me about. I looked around but Niall was nowhere to be seen. I sighed relieved and entered the shop. A bell went off as I made my way to the cash register.
"Hi."
The teenage boy looked up at me. I read his name tag.
Jake Starr Wasn’t he Jade’s brother?
"I’d like a pack of Kent cigarettes."
He looked up from his phone and smirked, looking at something on my right, before looking back at me.
"And how old are you?” he asked smirking.
"Sixteen."
"You shouldn’t smoke you know,” he said, but I could hear the amusement in his voice. He was obviously a smoker, judging by his smile and groggy voice.
I heard a deep chuckle behind me and turned around. I saw Niall a few feet away from me, with a Vodka bottle in his right hand and a cigarette in his other. He had some black Ray-Bans on and he was dressed just like this morning.
"I wouldn’t have pictured you as a smoker…” Niall said and took a step forwards, setting his bottle on the table, for Jake to scan.
"I won’t give you the cigarettes unless you do something for me,” Jake whispered and wiggled his eyebrows.
Niall laughed and Jake fist-bumped him. Of course, they were friends.
"Nah mate I don’t think she’ll suck you off.” he then continued and paid him.
"Why not?"
"She’s a virgin, look at her."
Jake raised his eyebrows and made a disgusted face.
"And you’re sixteen?"
I shrugged, blushing, and feeling embarrassed.
"So these are for you?” Niall asked pointing to the Kent pack placed on the counter. I bit the inside of my cheek and nodded. Maybe he’ll get off my back and leave me alone.
"Well fuck it then, I’ll pay them for you."
Niall paid for the cigarettes and pinched my nipple, making me gasp, before he exited the shop in laughter.
Jake was laughing too and shaking his head. I made my way towards the exit, completely annoyed with both of them.
"See you around.,” he yelled after me and I closed the door behind me.
I walked down the stairs and looked for my skateboard, but it was nowhere to be seen. I immediately knew that Niall had taken it.
I arrived home around seven because I had to walk twenty minutes. Honestly; who did this kid think he was to take my skateboard and let me walk?
The only entertainment I had during the long was reading the label on the cigarette package over and over again.
"What took you so long?” my grandfather spat and strolled over to me as I entered the living room, discarding my shoes.
"Uh…"
He pulled the pack out of my hand and shooed me away. I rolled my eyes and walked up the stairs, jumping two at once. I washed my hands and threw myself on the bed, pulling the laptop open and plugging it in.
I immediately clicked the Safari button, but it said that the website wasn’t available. I refreshed; still nothing. Then something occurred to me.
I went to the settings and saw that Niall’s Wi-Fi was now password protected. I groaned. I knew I couldn’t live two days without the Internet.
I angrily slammed my laptop shut and looked around for things to do. Nothing. No skateboard, no Wi-Fi…just…homework?
No.
I sighed and dropped myself on the seat, opening the back-pack that was at the foot of the desk. I was about to start writing the first math test (I was actually good at math) when my phone rang beside me.
I picked it up and saw Katherine’s ID flashing on the screen. I answered.
"Hello?” I asked confused.
"REYREY!"
I cringed at her nickname. Don’t. Just don’t.
I got up and went to open the window since it was starting to get too hot in the room.
"Are you… coming to the bonfire at the beach… tonight?"
She was doing weird sounds and she seemed to struggle with talking.
I stopped when I saw her sitting on Niall’s bed; her phone held in her hand in front of her; obviously, I was on speaker. Niall’s window was positioned to reveal his bed that was pushed against the wall, right in front of the window.
Katherine was on her back, on the left side of the bed, with her legs spread, her skirt up to her stomach, and Niall’s pinkish hair between her thighs. I blushed at the image.
"Uh…I don’t think so,” I mumbled and heard her whine, From what I could see, she’d whined because Niall suddenly pulled away from her and wiped his mouth, aiming for something out of sight.
Thank god that grandma’s bedroom was on the floor below, so she couldn’t see what was going on next door.
"Why not? You should loosen up a bit."
I saw her hand going down her stomach, towards her private area, so I turned around, backing away from the window.
"I don’t- hold on."
The phone vibrated and I looked at the screen. I had a new message.
I opened it.
Niall: if u want ur sk8board back u shud cum 2 da partie My eyes burned at his grammar.
I bit my lip and sighed, before returning to Katherine.
"Fine, I’ll come."
"Great! Be over in ten!"
I heard a deep voice saying something to her, and I knew it was him. She giggled and said:
"In half an hour, forty minutes tops."
I rolled my eyes and hung up. God.
I decided to wear shorts, a pair of suspenders, a shirt, a hair bow, and a pair of black sneakers.
After my makeup was done, I sat down on the bed and thought about what could happen.
I had two options:
I could go there, have a good time and get my skateboard at the end of the party; or I could go there, get my skateboard, somehow get the Wi-Fi password and then skate back.
I chose the latter and right when I was about to go and do homework again, the door swung open and Katherine barged in, wearing a pair of jeans, heels, and a tube top. She was holding two coats in her hand.
"I’m not wearing this, don’t worry, my dress is in my backpack."
She threw her backpack on the bed and pointed at it.
"Put your party clothes in there."
"Uh…that’s what I’m wearing."
“That?” she said and put one of the coats on, tossing the other one in my face.
"Put it on, it hides your party clothes. I always sneak out on Wednesday, telling grandma that I’m going to Jade’s weekly slumber party."
I nodded and zipped the big coat up. It went over my fingers and made me look like a potato sack.
"Why is your coat so big?” I asked and grabbed the backpack, zipping it up.
It contained a Tequila bottle, a pair of wedges, a mini skirt, a bikini, and a makeup kit. I put it over my shoulders.
"It’s not mine. It’s Sean’s."
"Sean?"
Wasn’t he that guy that I crashed into yesterday?
"Yeah, Sean Black."
I shrugged and followed her down the stairs, into the hallway.
"We’re going grandma!” she yelled and I heard a scream of approval coming from the kitchen.
We hurried down the stairs and took a right turn, before walking down the street. W reached the bus station and she looked at the time on her phone. It was 8:30 pm.
We heard a car coming down the road. It was a black Range Rover. I saw that Niall was the one driving it. Next to him sat Sean, and I couldn’t see who was in the back seat, because the windows weren’t see-through, just the windshield.
The car stopped in front of us and the back door opened; so did the passenger’s door. Sean made eye contact with me and smirked.
"One of you should sit on his lap, it’s crowded in the back.” a voice was heard from the backseat.
There was Jade, Jake, a blonde guy, and a girl who I recognized as the girl who had that three-way kiss with Katherine and Niall.
Katherine climbed in the back and took the backpack with her.
"Looks like you’re going to sit on my lap babe.” Sean grinned and I flushed, climbing in the car. He pulled me on his lap, so my back was against his chest.
Niall was wearing a pair of black tight jeans, green Supras, a black shirt, and his hair was pulled up in a quiff, highlighted with a greenish color.
He had a lip ring and his right ear was pierced with several tiny rings. Then he stuck his tongue out and licked his bottom lip, letting me know that his lip piercing wasn’t missing.
I squirmed uncomfortably in Sean’s lap and he moaned.
"Right there, baby."
Everyone laughed and I turned red, sitting still.
The only reason I agreed to this was because Niall bribed me and I wanted my skateboard back.
The ride to the beach was uncomfortable. They talked about perverted things, parties, and which position gave better pleasure during sex.
I was silent the whole time, and when we got there, I almost kissed the ground. Niall pulled up in a parking lot that was right across the street from the beach.
I could see the bonfire from where we stood; it was huge. There were a lot of voices, laughter, and loud music, people scattered everywhere.
I suddenly got anxious. I’d never been to a real party before, except those classic birthday parties and that party where I had my first and only kiss.
Katherine changed behind the car, now clothed in a mini skirt, a tube top, and wedges. She had a bikini on, and apparently, they were planning on taking a bath in the sea.
It was quite warm, and I had the feeling that I was the only one that didn’t bring a bikini.
We crossed the street, and I noticed a fun fair next to the hotels to our left, and a small shopping coast.
"It’s amazing here, we come almost every day,” Katherine said to me as we stepped on the sand. I knew it was a bad decision to wear sneakers because they’ll get filled with sand.
Niall ran a hand through his quiff and scratched his chest before our group -if I could call it that- joined the party.
My heart was beating faster than usual as I scanned my surroundings. There was a bar next to a small terrace that was full of drinks and red cups.
There were lounge chairs all over the place, most of them occupied by either clothing or couples that were practically having sex.
The music came from the terrace that was also filled with people, more precisely people between the ages of 16 to 20.
I felt out of place because I seemed to be too young. I looked around and spotted Niall leaning against the bar as he talked to a girl, waiting for his drink. He had a flirty smile playing on his lips, and she kept rocking back and forth on her heels. His eyes kept falling from her lips to her chest.
I made my way over there because I wanted to get this whole ordeal over with. I just wanted my skateboard back.
His eyes lifted from her cleavage and made eye contact with me before he shamelessly checked me out.
"Hi,” I said and Niall lifted his chin, raising his eyebrows.
The girl looked at me annoyed and strolled away.
"Great. Thank you for the cockblock.” he muttered.
"Where’s my skateboard?"
He grinned, sticking his hands in his front pockets.
"I don’t have it."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean I don’t have it."
"You said you’d give it to me,” I whined and he rolled his eyes.
"It’s in my trunk."
"Can you give it to me please?"
"If you take the keys."
"Where are they?"
"In my boxers."
"You’re joking right?"
He shook his head, but he was smiling. I rolled my eyes.
"Find me in half an hour and we’ll talk babe."
He called me babe. Somehow I felt special-but he probably called all girls babe, just like Sean did.
He walked away with a red cup in his hand. I stood there, stupidly looking after him, as he got lost in the crowd.
I decided to sit down on a lounge chair and pull my phone out to play Temple Run.
Time passed, and an hour later, I stood up and went to look for Niall. He was nowhere to be seen, just like the rest of his friends.
My eyes drifted to the water, and I saw some silhouettes in the water, yelling and laughing. I immediately spotted Niall; his tattoos weren’t hard to locate.
He made eye contact with me and smirked before he whispered something in Katherine’s ear. She made eye contact with me and nodded, before turning around.
Niall walked towards me and came out of the water, droplets dripping down from his hair.
He smirked at me and walked by, towards the parking lot. I followed him, and I couldn’t help but stare at his tattooed back.
I followed him to his car and he opened the trunk, taking out my skateboard.
"How do you plan on getting home?"
"I don’t know…I’ll find a way."
"Okay."
He really didn’t care. I took the skateboard out of his hand and let it drop at my feet.
Another question popped into my head.
"What’s the Wi-Fi password?"
He closed the trunk and smirked.
"I actually wondered when you’d ask me."
"Well?"
"I’ll tell you…"
I smiled.
"IF."
Of course, there was an if.
"If you’ll kiss me."
"What?"
He laughed and I rolled my eyes.
"I’m joking, gosh. I’ll tell you the password if you’ll prove to me that you smoke. Because I don’t believe you."
My eyes widened but I recovered quickly.
"Oh…okay."
He seemed surprised but opened his trunk again and got out a lighter and a pack of cigarettes.
He fished one out and lighted it, before taking a smoke and letting it out. He handed me the cigarette and I looked at it.
He laughed as he watched me, waiting for my next move. I took it to my lips, the fact that Niall touched it with his lips intriguing me.
I inhaled and kept the smoke inside me before I coughed it out. He laughed, throwing his head back.
My cheeks were red and I felt humiliated.
"You have never smoked before, have you?"
I shook my head. He took the cigarette back and took another drag, letting it out. I was surprised and tried to pull away, but he kept me still.
"Open your mouth."
I parted my lips slightly and he took another drag, before leaning down, his lips a few millimeters from mine.
My heart was beating fast as I made eye contact with his blue orbs. He opened his lips and let the smoke between mine. It felt good.
He let go of my face and took a step back, without saying anything. He slammed the trunk shut and ruffled his hair, before walking past me, but not without pinching my nipple.
I turned around and watched him disappear, before walking around his car and looking around for an exit.
I saw a red-headed girl struggle with something in her purse, before dropping it and cursing. She had tears in her eyes as she dropped to her stomach to look for it under her car.
"Do you need help?"
She looked up at me and I smiled. She stood up with her car keys in hand.
"Uh…not really but thanks."
"Are you okay?"
She shook her head. “Long story.”
I shrugged. “I got time.”
She eyed me before she smiled.
"Do you need a ride?"
"Depends where you’re going."
She told me the address and I nodded, letting her know that we lived on the same street. Her eyes lighted up and I got in the car.
She spent the whole time in the car telling me her story: she told me that she was called Kaylee Hicks and that she was crying because of a guy (she didn’t give a name) that kept kissing and hooking up with her, making her feel special, but then he pretended that he didn’t know her in front of his friends.
Her best friend was a guy named Ricky- the blonde guy that was in the car when we drove to the beach.
I was about to get out of the car, but then I remembered that I was supposed to be at Jade’s sleepover.
"Shit.” I cursed, my hand unmoved from the door handle.
"What?"
"I was supposed to cover up for my cousin…our grandma thinks we’re at Jade’s house."
"Jade Starr?"
I nodded and her facial expression changed to hurt before she quickly masked it.
"Uh…you can come to my place if you want to,” she said.
"Really?"
She nodded and drove down the street, before stopping four houses away. She pointed to a house across from her as she unlocked the door:
"That’s Ricky’s house and the one to its left is Jake’s house. I mean Jade’s.” she stuttered and entered the house.
It was pitch black so she turned on a light and explained to me that her parents were working a night shift at a police station.
I got comfortable in a pair of PJ’s she gave me, and it was quite odd how we soon became friends.
"Can you tell me something about each kid that lives on this street? I mean…I’m just curious."
She nodded. “Who do you want to know about?”
"Well, there was this girl…a blonde one with blue eyes?"
"That’s Hannah Faye,” she said and gave me a bowl of popcorn as we sat down on her double bed. "She’s one of the neighborhood’s slags. Together with Jade and your cousin."
I laughed.
"What about Sean Black?"
"He’s the typical bad boy. Smokes, does drugs…there’s not much to say about him, I’m not that close to him."
"And the brothers?"
"Uh…Jade is okay I guess but she has a lot of boyfriends and Jake’s a fucking prick."
I somehow got the feeling that Jake was the guy that made her cry, but I didn’t say anything about it.
"And Niall?"
"He’s the worst."
"I heard he’s changed."
"Totally. Two years ago, before his father left them, he was cute and nice, but then he changed. He’s arrogant and thinks he’s better than everyone else. He has too much pride and thinks he’s a panty dropper with his piercings and tattoos."
I gulped, thinking about his chest that was littered with tattoos. The way he told me to open my mouth and then blew the smoke…
"So that’s why you shouldn’t get involved with him. He’s trouble."
I nodded, not paying attention to a single word she said. Thinking about Niall brought a new memory to my mind: He didn’t tell me the Wi-Fi password!
He was such a cheater…
We fell asleep gossiping about hot celebrity guys and eating popcorn.
***
I ran a hand through my hair as I exited Kaylee’s house. She waved at me and I waved back, before hopping on my skateboard and skateboarding down the street towards my house.
It was still dark, it was 6 am; Kaylee was going out for a run and I wasn’t that tired, to be honest.
I stopped in my tracks when I saw Jade and Katherine coming out of Niall’s house, behind them a very hungover Hannah. All three of them had, as many would call it, sex hair, and they were rubbing their temples, with one hand, holding their shoes in the other.
Niall stood in the doorway, leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed over his tattooed chest. He watched the girls walking towards Jade’s house and they didn’t even notice me.
I watched them as they stumbled into Jade’s house, giggling and saying something among the lines of: “foursome” and “amazing cock”. I almost threw up.
I was about to walk to my house and sneak in -grandma only woke up around nine, so she wouldn’t even hear me-, when I heard someone calling my name.
I knew the voice, yet I still turned around. Niall looked at me and his eyes fell on my legs. I remembered that I was still in shorts and a pretty see-through shirt.
He waved me over but I didn’t budge. Then I remembered that I needed the Wi-Fi password.
I cursed mentally as I took the skateboard under my arm and walked over. He pushed himself off the doorway and disappeared inside.
My eyebrows furrowed as I came to a halt.
He appeared in the doorframe again, smirking and inviting me in.
"If you dare babe,” he said and I couldn’t help but think how hot his morning voice was.
I gulped and stepped over his doorstep. His hands were crossed on his chest as looked at me.
"I knew you’d come for the password."
"Can you tell me it?"
"On one condition."
"What?” I groaned.
"You’ll come to every party your cousin invites you to."
"And how will you know that I will after you give me the password?"
"I can change it anytime babe."
I nodded. “Okay, so what is it?”
He came over to me, and towered over me as he leaned down, to whisper in my ear:
"Masturbating."
I turned red and swatted his arm, taking a step back.
"You serious?” I asked in disbelief.
He nodded, taking his lip ring between his teeth. I turned around and muttered a thank you, before I exited the house, leaving him like that, feeling his stare all over my back.
Two hours later, I was in my bedroom, scrolling through my dashboard when I received a text.
It was from Niall.
My heart sped up.
Niall: c babe? that pic of u gets me excited every time ;)
I dropped my phone, turning red because he’d attached a picture of himself in just his tenting boxers.
Rey: stop it Niall Niall: Oh babe dis is jst the begining ;)
I bit my lip.
If I only knew…
