Alexis's POV:
"Stop staring at that screen, Sophie!" I warned my older sister. "You've been completely absorbed in your laptop for over an hour. It's not good for your eyes!" She broke the staring contest with her computer to look up at me and roll her eyes.
"How about no. You never listen to me, so why should I listen to you?" she spat back, flipping her hair over her shoulder before looking back at the screen in front of her.
What could be so important?
"That's because this is a free country and I really don't have any interest in hearing what you have to say about how I dress!"
Sophie had long wavy brown hair that complimented her seemingly black eyes. She also had a body that I could only dream of having.
If you can't tell by now, Sophie and I are polar opposites. She goes shopping every weekend and gets her nails done. Not to mention all of the guys that ask her out on a daily basis.
She rolled her eyes yet again, "Exactly, it's a free country, so I don't need to listen to you either. And tell that to all the guys that call you. Oh wait, no one ever calls you, except that weird guy that always wears those huge glasses and suspenders." She paused to think for a moment before continuing, "Um...Andy, was it? If you would fix yourself up a bit, look a little presentable, maybe the male population would notice your existence."
"Are we seriously gonna have this conversation again, Soph?!" I yelled, getting a bit annoyed that she involved Andy in this conversation—again. I had two best friends: Jazz and Andy. We had been friends since the fifth grade.
Seriously, though, I was comfortable like this. I shouldn't need to change myself to please others.
"We wouldn't have to have this conversation if you would just change the way you dress. Look at Jasmin for example, " she said as she turned off the laptop. Sophie referred to Jazz a lot when it came to my fashion choices. Jazz was a lot like Sophie; she used makeup, kept up with the latest trends, and also wore those killers that girls at my school called heels. I mean, who was comfortable wearing those things? I read that they were not good for the heels of your feet.
My best friend and sister always tried to change the way that I dressed, but I never let them. I thought it was completely stupid to dress up to go to school like it was some sort of beauty pageant.
Let me introduce myself... My name is Alexis Coleman. I have dark brown, somewhat black, long hair. My eyes are a stunning shade of green—I personally think they could make the Wicked Witch of the West jealous. I also think that my eyes compliment my petite figure really nicely. My older sister shares some of my features as well, but we both got our looks from our mom.
My friend list isn't long at all. My two best friends are the only ones that I really need though. They're awesome friends, and they're always there for me when I need them to be.
Andy has honey brown hair that shines, and he also has green eyes that make him stand out. Green eyes are just delightful. He is just like me, and that's why our friendship has lasted this long. We agree on a lot of topics.
Jazz, on the other hand, has long silky blonde hair and fabulous blue eyes. When you look into them, your worries just disappear. Her height is about average for our age.
After the brief argument I had with Sophie, I sat at my reading table and played sudoku. Yes, I enjoyed playing sudoku, whereas my peers preferred going to parties and getting wasted. Complete waste of time.
After winning a few games, I laid in bed and stared at the ceiling fan, watching it spin in circles for a few seconds before I got an incoming text from Andy.
Andy: Hey there!
Me: Hi Andy
Andy: Are you ready for school to start?
Me: Not really...
I don't want to see Christina again this year.
I closed my phone and laid it on my chest. Christina was so mean. She was just a malicious person. I didn't understand why she targeted me. Did she not have anything better to do?
Andy: Ignore her, she's just rude Me: Totally...
Andy: Aly, I wanted to tell you something important...
Me: Okay, go for it I closed my phone again. My heart was hammering in my chest—not for any particular reason, just the fact that his sentence was a daunting one.
Andy: Never mind, it's nothing important He was always acting weird around me. Jazz thought he liked me, but I didn't think so. After all, the male population didn't notice me in that way.
After playing a few more games of sudoku out of boredom, I fell asleep thinking about the school year in front of me.
Chapter 2 — Loud Noises and Sudoku | The Beautiful Nerd
↓
Alexis's POV:
I woke up to a very loud and annoying sound. The noise was coming from Sophie's room at 7:30 in the freaking morning. I don't know why she thought it would be a good idea to disturb others while they were trying to sleep.
Said noise was a song, A Justin Bieber one. Flatline was blaring through her speakers. Boy I wish I could flatline, maybe then I could actually get some peaceful sleep.
I really don't know why girls go crazy about Justin Bieber. I mean sure he was cute back when he first started music but he's not all that!
I prefer Rihanna, Her lyrics just speak to me. But no, my sister can't even get behind me with music taste. She says that my choice in music is just as my taste in clothes, indicating that it was "terrible."
I crawl up from my warm bed with my hair looking like I stuck a fork in an outlet and make my way to the next room to find the door wide open. Sophie was inside singing along at the top of her voice with a hairbrush in her hand, as her imaginary microphone.
I enter Sophie's room and walk towards her, "Isn't it too early for this madness?" I asked the wannabe singer.
"Nope, " she said not bothering to turn around to look at me, This is becoming a habit of hers. "You need to start waking up early. Seriously, I think you're gaining some pounds, thank God your summer is over." she continued, now staring at me.
"Don't remind me." I couldn't help but let a scowl show itself on my face. "I have to see that wench once more, I'm just glad it's senior year. I really can't wait to graduate." I sigh.
"Well you wouldn't have a problem with her if you just change up your look a little." Sophie commented and I rolled my eyes.
"I don't want to hear it." I say waving my hand and turn to leave. " I'm going to make breakfast since mom hasn't arrived yet, her shift ends 8am."
"Okay, I want pancakes and orange juice and please go brush your teeth" Sophie ordered then giggled. I didn't respond to her.
A few minutes later I was drying off from a quick shower. My black long skirt and my long sleeved top was laying on the counter in the bathroom and I changed into them. Yes I dress nerdy at home too because I just feel comfortable its who I am.
As soon as I'm downstairs I head to the kitchen to make pancakes. A short while later I was setting the food on the table and the doorbell rang.
I unlock the front door and swing it open to find my mom standing on the outside.
"Hey sweetie" mom said as she walked in. "I left my house key at the store by mistake." She laughed and looked at me embarrassed. I laughed and gave her a hug.
"How's the store?" I ask with a never fading smile.
"We are still a little bit short on staff, but George said he'd be able to handle it." By her expression, it seemed she enjoyed the night at the bakery and she brought home some donuts.
"Sophie! Moms home." I yell up to my sister and wait a few seconds, no response. "There's doughnuts!" I yell again and as expected Sophie was in view within seconds.
She stalked into the room in her bathrobe and yanked the bag of doughnuts from my hands. Donuts are Sophie's favorite she would kill for them.
"Soph, that's for you and your sister, so don't go crazy." mom warned but she ignored the warning.
"Sophie keep that for later let's have pancakes." I tell her hoping she will spare some for me.
"Who said I can't have both?" my sister replied as she stuffed her second one into her mouth. Though my sister was trendy she also ate a lot but it just doesn't show because she works out.
"Girls since today is the last day of summer vacation we will be going to the mall to pick up a few things and I want you guys to go shopping but don't get too crazy." My mom smiled at Sophie.
Sophie let out a squeal of excitement.
"I don't want to go." I deadpanned, Sophie's expression went from joy to annoyed within a millisecond and she stared at me with evil eyes.
"Why don't you? You never want to go and that's why you never have anything good to wear!" She hissed at me while maintaining her stare.
"How is me not going affecting you? You can knock yourself out!" I say more calmly than I wanted to sound.
"Whatever I don't care." She spat taking her plate and donut pack and walking away. We always end up like this whenever the idea of a mall comes up so I just leave the dining table and head straight up to my room because I didn't want to show that I'm hurt in front of my mom.
I just laid on my bed thinking about what she had said. She was right, I had never been interested in the mall because I thought it was unnecessary to always shop for new clothes. I preferred the ones that I had.
A few hours later I'm sitting on the sofa watching Parent Trap. I've enjoyed this movie since I was young.
Boy was it funny when my mom and sister walked in. Soph had so many bags you could barely see the girl holding them all so I went to go help her with them.
When I dropped them on her bed and turn to leave when she called me back "Here those are yours!"
This was why I loved her so much, no matter our issues we never stayed mad long. I turn and she gives me four bags and I pulled her into a hug and she smiles.
"Thank you Sophie, " I thanked. "But what did you get for me"? I curiously asked but she chose to ignore my question. I open the bags when I get to my room and find some dresses, trousers and some half tops, which she called cropped tops. I took everything and shoved them inside my closet.
After a long day of doing nothing I decided to play some more Sudoku. I'm going to have to buy another book of it soon, I'm almost finished with the 'super difficult' section.
